The Tulsa Roughnecks FC bounced back from a disappointing loss last weekend with a 2-1 victory over Saint Louis FC Thursday night at ONEOK Field.  The Roughnecks got a first-half wonder goal from Jorge Corrales and a second-half strike from Joey Calistri to record the victory.

The result improved Tulsa’s record to 9-9-2 and its point total to 29, good for seventh spot in the USL’s Western Conference.  Saint Louis FC fell to 6-5-9 with 23 points in the East.

It was not all good news for the Roughnecks on the night.  Captain Juan Caffa suffered an apparent leg injury in the 16th minute of the match and was subbed off.  His status for the Saturday’s Black Gold Derby is unknown.

The Roughnecks began the match with a different lineup than has been used this season.  Jaime Ayala filled in at right back for the injured Kosuke Kimura, while Brandt Bronico started in a defensive midfield slot.  Christian Thierjung made his second start, and Brian Wright, making his second appearance for TRFC this season, started up front, giving leading goal scorer Ian Svantesson a night off.

With the new starting eleven, TRFC nearly took a lead just two minutes into the match when Thierjung got behind the backline, but from a tough angle, he hit the side netting with his shot.

A brilliant effort from Corrales opened the scoring in the 26th minute.  With the Roughnecks on the attack, a clearance rolled outside the penalty area.  An on-rushing Corrales struck a left-footed blast from five yards outside the area that beat Saint Louis goalkeeper Devala Gorrick to make it 1-0.

Saint Louis coach Preki made two changes to open the second half, but it was Tulsa who started on the attack.  Less than 60 seconds after the restart, Thierjung had a chance to double the lead, but his volley went over the crossbar.

The second goal finally came in the 70th minute.  A pair of STL defenders failed to take the ball away from Wright as he attacked down the right side.  When the big forward entered the penalty area, he unselfishly laid a pass off for Calistri about 15 yards from goal.  Calistri turned his defender around and struck a left-footed shot into the net for his sixth goal of the season, tied for second-most on the team.

The Roughnecks will have little time to enjoy the result as the second edition of the Black Gold Derby looms on Saturday when the Oklahoma City Energy makes its only visit to Tulsa this season. 

Vaudreuil is well aware of what lies ahead.

“We now go into Saturday with the right mentality against Oklahoma City,” he said.  “OKC has been playing very well, and we expect them to come here with confidence.  We have to come out and play our very best, but I expect us to go out and put some goals on the board.”

Earlier this year, Tulsa recorded a 2-1 victory in OKC.  Three important points will be up for grabs as the two teams occupy the seventh and eighth places in the Western Conference table.

Tulsa Roughnecks FC will be in action at ONEOK Field this week for a pair of important matches.  The set of two games will open with a meeting with Interstate 44 rivals Saint Louis FC on Thursday night, followed by the second edition of the Black Gold Derby with the Oklahoma City Energy on Saturday.  Both matches will kick off at 7:30 p.m. in downtown Tulsa.

Thursday’s match will feature a $5 Thursday promotion with Lawn and Busch Terrace Tickets only $5 each and all other tickets $5 off.  In addition, fans can take advantage of a special at the concession stands, where a hot dog or nacho and a beer or soft drink in pick-2 combo can be purchased for only $5.  It is also a Bark in the Park Night, with fans able to bring their dogs to the match, and a Thirsty Thursday, with 16-ounce soft drinks and 12-ounce servings of Bud and Bud Light on sale for only $1 each

Saturday’s match not only features a second meeting with Oklahoma City, but it is also Library Reading Night.  Students who participated in the Summer Reading Program receiving free general admission tickets, plus getting coupon that will get them $2 off on all other tickets.  In addition, the first 1,000 students will receive a Roughnecks lanyard that is perfect for back to school.  Saturday will also feature an Oklahoma Blood Institute Blood Drive from 1:30-6:30 p.m. at the stadium with all persons giving blood receiving a pair of tickets to the September 23 match against the LA Galaxy II.   

The Roughnecks will look to return to their winning ways after seeing their five-match unbeaten run snapped with a 3-2 loss to Reno last Saturday.  TRFC is currently in the eighth and final playoff spot in the USL’s Western Conference standings, but only four points separate the five teams that are in the seventh through eleventh spots in the table. 

After finishing the month of July undefeated, Thursday’s match is the second of six games during a busy August for the Roughnecks.  However, the two matches this week are the final home games at ONEOK Field during the month.  Tulsa will not return home again until hosting Los Dos on Saturday, September 23.

NOTES: Ian Svantesson and Juan Pablo Caffa continued to add to their goal-scoring totals in Saturday’s loss to Reno.  Svantesson scored his team-leading ninth goal in the game, while Caffa, who is second to Svantesson in goals scored, added his sixth of the year with a highlight-reel free kick just after halftime. . .The Saturday meeting with the Oklahoma City Energy will be the second of three games between the state rivals.  Tulsa defeated the Energy 2-1 back on July 8 and could clinch the season series with a second victory. . .The game with Saint Louis FC is the first of two this season between the rivals with the return game scheduled for August 23 in St. Louis.

A efectos deportivos, la derrota del pasado sábado ante el Reno 1860 FC supuso que los de Vaudreuil rompieran la racha de cinco partidos sin perder. El equipo naranja se encuentra actualmente en el octavo puesto de la tabla, con acceso al play off. Hay que tener en cuenta que hay varios equipos –cinco- separados por muy pocos puestos entre el séptimo y el undécimo puesto en la tabla. Tienen que valorar los aficionados de los Roughnecks que los partidos de agosto como locales terminan este próximo sábado porque el equipo no volverá a jugar como local en el ONEOK Field hasta el 23 de septiembre ante el segundo equipo de Los Angeles Galaxy.

FECHAS: El partido que jugarán el sábado ante los OK Energy será el segundo de los tres que jugarán este año ambos equipos. En la ida en Oklahoma City el equipo venció 2-0 el pasado 8 de julio. Por su parte, ante los Saint Louis FC jugarán por vez primera este jueves. La vuelta será el 23 de agosto.

The Tulsa Roughnecks FC staged a big comeback Saturday night at ONEOK Field in a rematch with Reno 1868 FC, but a heartbreaking, late goal ended Tulsa’ five-match unbeaten run.  After the Roughnecks overturned a two-goal first-half deficit, Reno found a late winner to record a 3-2 victory in downtown Tulsa.

It was the first loss for TRFC since June 27 after going unbeaten throughout the month of July.  The defeat leaves the Roughnecks on 26 points with an 8-9-2 record and drops them into the eighth and final playoff position in the Western Conference standings. Tulsa does have two and three games in-hand on two of the three teams directly in front of it in the standings.

Reno improved to 33 points with a 9-5-6 record after the victory.

The first chance of the match fell to the Roughnecks in the 8th minute.  Ian Svantesson slid through the Reno backline and found himself one-on-one with goalkeeper Matt Bersano.  Bersano came up big and smothered the shot to keep the match scoreless.

That changed in the 19th minute.  Reno midfielder Luis Felipe Fernandes chipped a ball over Roughnecks defender Aaron Guillen and delivered a perfect layoff to Antoine Hoppenot in front of goal.  Hoppenot was unmarked and easily slide his shot into the net to give Reno the early 1-0 lead.

Seven minutes later the lead doubled to 2-0.  After a run down the left side, Chris Wehan set up USL career goals leader Dane Kelly in front of goal.  The lethal Kelly left TRFC keeper Fabian Cerda with no chance as his right-footed shot blasted into the back of the net.

After the halftime break, that game turned as the Roughnecks came out on the attack, and Juan Pablo Caffa promptly pulled a goal back just seven minutes after the restart.  After a foul was whistled just outside the left side of the penalty area, the Tulsa captain performed his magic, curving a left-footed shot into the upper corner, just inside the far post.  It was Caffa’s sixth goal of the season, and three have come on free kicks.

In the final six minute and three minutes of stoppage time, the Roughnecks could not find an equalizer for a second time, giving 1868 the full three points.  Tulsa fell despite out-shooting Reno 13-7 in the match.

“I was happy with the way the guys responded after giving up the two goals,” said TRFC Head Coach David Vaudreuil.  “We showed a lot of heart and battled back with the two goals, but we could not finish it off.”

Vaudreuil’s attention now turns to Saint Louis FC and Black Gold Derby foes OKC Energy, who will both visit ONEOK Field on Thursday and Sunday.  “This loss gives us more incentive to go win the two games,” he said.  “We will rotate players, but we can’t sit back and wait for it to happen.  We have to make it happen.” 

The pair of games will complete a three-game stretch of home games for the Roughnecks.  The stand will continue with the Thursday meeting with Saint Louis FC. Which will be followed by the Saturday match with the Oklahoma City Energy.  Both games will kick off at 7:30 p.m. at ONEOK Field.  Tickets are available by clicking HERE.

After the equalizer, the game turned again as Reno retook control, owning most of the possession.  The pressure finally paid off in the 84th minute.  Substitute Brian Brown dribbled past Jorge Corrales and Bradley Bourgeios down the right wing before crossing to Chris Wehan.  Wehan was unmarked just three yards in front of goal and pushed his shot into the net before a sliding Jaime Ayala could keep it out.

In the final six minute and three minutes of stoppage time, the Roughnecks could not find an equalizer for a second time, giving 1868 the full three points.  Tulsa fell despite out-shooting Reno 13-7 in the match.

“I was happy with the way the guys responded after giving up the two goals,” said TRFC Head Coach David Vaudreuil.  “We showed a lot of heart and battled back with the two goals, but we could not finish it off.”

Vaudreuil’s attention now turns to Saint Louis FC and Black Gold Derby foes OKC Energy, who will both visit ONEOK Field on Thursday and Sunday.  “This loss gives us more incentive to go win the two games,” he said.  “We will rotate players, but we can’t sit back and wait for it to happen.  We have to make it happen.” 

The pair of games will complete a three-game stretch of home games for the Roughnecks.  The stand will continue with the Thursday meeting with Saint Louis FC. Which will be followed by the Saturday match with the Oklahoma City Energy.  Both games will kick off at 7:30 p.m. at ONEOK Field.  Tickets are available by clicking HERE.
