The first half was one of the rare occasions where the Scissortails outpossessed their opponent with 57 percent of the ball. Tulsa created its fair share of attacking threats but could not find the back of the net with neither side tested the keepers with a shot on target.

The visitors woke up out of the locker room with an unfortunate deflection setting up a go-ahead strike for Detroit. Tulsa pushed time after time for an equalizer but could not find the final pass as the club’s four-match shutout streak came to an end.

The Scissortails’ club-record shutout streak of 441 minutes was snapped along with its streak of four clean sheets for goalkeeper Dane Jacomen. Forward Remi Cabral returned to action for the first time since June 20 as a second half substitute but could not steer a shot on net.

KEY STORYLINES

It has been a busy transaction week for the Scissortails with a pair of acquisitions and a contract extension:

• Midfielder Will Wilson: The Kenyan midfielder arrives in Oklahoma from the Finnish first division and looks to incorporate his international experience to provide another spark in the Tulsa transition game.
• Defender Joel Sangwa: If you are going to earn a full roster spot on a 25-day contract as a defender, contributing to four consecutive shutouts certainly helps your case. In the right wingback role, Sangwa has shown great on-ball defensive prowess while also contributing in the Scissortail attack with some enticing crosses and runs.
• Defender Wilson Eisner: On loan from San Diego FC, Eisner provides a capable solution out wide who can cover an entire side of the pitch. The 24-year-old will look to rely on his top-level experience to add another dimension to the Scissortails in their playoff push.

FC Tulsa has been dealing with a revolving door of injuries in 2026 but still sit at fourth place in the Western Conference. Goalkeeper Alex Tambakis and defender Harvey St Clair are expected back soon with midfielders Marcos Cerato and Boubacar Diallo hopeful to make it back during the final stretch of the season.

After getting six of its last seven league matches at home, the Black and Gold now prepare for the inverse of that with only one match at ONEOK Field before the end of September. Not only do the Scissortails hit the road, but they do so against many of their fiercest competitors in the Western Conference including all three clubs currently ahead of them in the standings over the next four weeks – third-place New Mexico United (8/15), first-place Orange County SC (8/22) and second-place San Antonio FC (9/5).

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Goalkeeper Dane Jacomen: Jacomen has emerged as an unsung hero for the Scissortails in 2026 as he has excelled since being called into action in early July. With only one goal allowed in his last five starts and a staggering 0.50 GAA in the regular season, his presence has enabled Tulsa to surge up the conference standings these past few weeks and play with more confidence defensively knowing they can trust their guy in between the sticks.

Midfielder Jamie Webber: One of the league’s premier playmakers was at it again last Wednesday with his third goal of the regular season. Eight of Tulsa’s last 12 goals dating back to the middle of May have come from or because of Webber, who has served as the spark plug for the Scissortail attack in 2026.

Forward Remi Cabral: Fans were happy to see Cabral return to the pitch last Saturday in the attack after a leave for personal reasons. The French forward was in full rhythm prior to his time away with an impressive rate of 0.84 goals per 90 minutes across all competitions. He will hope to rediscover his scoring ways to ignite the attack.

OPPONENT INFO: NEW MEXICO UNITED

This is the tenth meeting between Tulsa and New Mexico with the Scissortails holding a slight lead in the all-time series. The highest profile match between these two sides came in last season’s Western Conference Final where Tulsa dominated in a 3-0 victory featuring a brace from Taylor Calheira and another goal from Jamie Webber. Tulsa are unbeaten in their last five matches against New Mexico since August 2023 including three consecutive wins for the Scissortails.

Dennis Sanchez is in his second season at the helm and has his club rolling at the moment with six straight victories across all competitions and are unbeaten in its last ten matches across all competitions. Greg Hurst has been in great form for New Mexico with three goals in his last three matches which has him as the club’s leading scorer. Niall Reid-Stephen and Valentin Noël also factor into the attack while Kristopher Shakes ranks fifth in the USL Championship with 54 saves.

You’ll see a 10 running next to him, and then you’ll see a midfielder running, too.  It’s like a domino effect, so it’s just easy to do it.”
