El anuncio ha llegado por parte de los Roughnecks. Y además, un anuncio importante: David Vaudreuil ha ampliado el contrato dos años más con el equipo naranja, al que estará únido hasta 2019. Bajo el mando del técnico de California, el equipo de Tulsa ha logrado entrar por vez primera en su historia en playoff. Un gran mérito para ser su primera temporada como entrenador.

Brian Carrol, vicepresidente del club, aseguró que “estamos entusiasmados de afirmar que nuestra primera noticia tras la temporada es la continuidad de Vaudreuil como técnico dos años más” y continuaba diciendo que “la pasada temporada ha sido crítica para nuestra entidad pero el entrenador Vaudreuil ha conseguido resultados positivos  en el campo además de hacer el juego vistoso para los aficionados del equipo. No hemos tenido la suerte de jugar más partidos en el playoff pero el equipo ha sido capaz de mejorar mucho”.

Bajo el mandato en el campo de Vaudreuil, el equipo ha conseguido  14 victorias, cuatro empates y catorce derrotas sumando en total 46 puntos. La derrota ante el San Antonio en los últimos instantes del choque, gracias a un discutido penalti,  no quita méritos a la excepcional temporada del equipo naranja. De la misma forma, el equipo de Tulsa ha ganado el Black Gold Derby Wrench siendo capaz de vencer a los del Energy de Oklahoma City en las series de la temporada regular.

Una vez conocida la noticia de la renovación, David Vaudreuil comentaba que “estoy muy emocionado por haber firmado dos años más en Tulsa porque esta ciudad ha sido importante para mí y para mi familia. Ha sido un buen primer año con un apoyo tremendo de nuestros aficionados. Estoy ilusionado ante el 2018 que empezará y tenemos que empezar a pensar en mejorar nuestro proyecto para la temporada que entra”.

El currículum de Vaudreuil, antiguo defensor con 131 partidos en sus botas en la MLS y dos títulos en la copa ha sido fundamental para conseguir ser filiales del Chicago Fire durante la pasada campaña. Graduado en la Universidad de Princeton, su experiencia se sostiene como entrenador de los Atlanta Silverbacks en la antigua USL First Division. Además, ha sido asistente en New England Revolution así como manager general de la Academia del AC Milan en USA. También colaboró con Bruce Arena cuando fue entrenador del equipo sub´18 de los Galaxy de Los Ángeles.

En la temporada 2016 fue asistente en los Rayo OKC en la North American Soccer League.

Comentario: Un discutido penalti dio al traste con el inicio de la historia de los Roughnecks en un playoff. Los de Vaudreuil pudieron lograr el pase en un partido en el que fueron mejores que los texanos durante muchos minutos, con juego combinativo y defendiendo muy bien las embestidas de un San Antonio que, pese a partir de favorito, se encontró en la prórroga con ua pena máxima señalada sobre Levín que hundió las expectativas de los naranjas, sin tiempo ya para tratar de dar la vuelta al marcador.

Porque el debut en el playoff fue de los imaginados. Un gol, impresionante en la definición, de Paris Gee en el 23 dio la tranquilidad necesaria a un equipo de Tulsa que se creció defendiendo, que jugó muy serio y que supo controlar el tiempo del partido pese al empuje de los locales, que buscaban el empate cuanto antes. De ahí la oportunidad de los de San Antonio, en el 36, con un remate de Forbes que se estrelló en el larguero. Fue la mejor ocasión de los de casa en la primera mitad, una parte en la que los Roughnecks trataron de aguantar el tipo sin perder el sitio y dando la cara en todo momento.

En la segunda parte los de San Antonio salieron apretando hasta lograr el empate cuando se llevaba poco más de un cuarto de hora. Un dispar de Cesar Elizondo ponía las tablas en el macador comenzando un nuevo choque con las espadas en alto. Empezaba una nueva vida en el partido con los locales empujado por una grada que alentaba con pasión, pero los de Vaudreuil no se achicaban y trataban de buscar presencia en un centro del campo muy poblado. Lo peor llegó cuando se esperaba la prórroga. Jonatan Levín llegaba al cruce con un rival, tocando la pelota primero pero el contacto posterior era seńalado por el colegiado como penalti. Era el minuto 94 y Guzman no fallaba dando la derrota a los Roughnecks en una campaña histórica en la que han roto moldes.

La historia, el sábado para el fútbol en Tulsa. El rival, San Antonio. La cita, para romper estadísticas. Lo demás, a estas alturas, ya no importa. Es todo a cara o cruz, un duelo en el que no sirven los resultados anteriores. Ganar o ganar para los Roughnecks. 

El escenario, el Toyota Field de San Antonio será el testigo a un solo choque del futuro del equipo de Vaudreuil, un equipo que, a ojos del técnico, aspiraa a esto a principios de la campaña. Y el resultado ahí está, listo para saborearlo en tierras texanas ante un rival que acabó mejor clasificado, de ahí la ventaja de campo como local. El segundo puesto del equipo local y el séptimo de los de Tulsa ha sido clave para la definición del campo.

El partido podrá seguirse por el canal de youtube de la USL a través del USL Match Center. Además, las redes sociales del equipo a través de twitter, en inglés y español darán cuenta del partido. De la misma forma, los Roustabouts se reunirán en el Busch Scoreboard  del ONEOK Field en una fiesta para todas las edades. En la fiesta habrá precios especiales en las bebidas además de alitas de pollo fritas y mordiscos de pollo de forma gratuita. Las puertas del estadio se abrirán a las 18:30 a través de la Archer Entrance, localizada en la zona sur del ONEOK Field.

Este año ha habido tres enfrentamientos entre ambos; en liga fueron mejores los de San Antonio que vencieron en casa, 3-1 repitiendo hace escasas fechas en el campo dr los naranjas 2-0. Por su parte los Roughnecks empataron en la US Open Cup derrotando a los texanos en la ronda de penalties tras una excepcional tarde de Fabián Cerda. El equipo que venza en esta ronda se medirá el vencedor de los Oklahoma Energy vs Reno 1868 FC.

The 2017 regular season finale began positively for the Tulsa Roughnecks FC on Saturday night, with TRFC taking an early two-goal lead, but Colorado Springs rallied with four straight goals to send the Roughnecks to a 4-2 defeat at ONEOK Field.  The loss leaves Tulsa with 46 points on the season with a 14-14-4 record.  The wins and the point total are both franchise records.

Despite the defeat, the Roughnecks will now prepare for their first-ever appearance in the USL Cup Playoffs which will begin next weekend.

With Saturday’s defeat, the Roughnecks will now have to wait until the conclusion of Sunday’s league matches to learn their first-round opponent.  Tulsa will finish in either the sixth, seventh or eighth positions and will face a road matchup against either the Real Monarchs SLC, San Antonio FC or Reno 1868 FC. 

Saturday’s finale started slowly with 20 minutes elapsing before the first shot on goal, but things quickly picked up.

A superb delivery from Juan Pablo Caffa helped give the Roughnecks the first goal of the match in the 29th minute as the TRFC captain’s lofted pass found Jaime Ayala.  The right back collected the pass and finished like a striker with a blast into the far corner of the net to give Tulsa the 1-0 lead.

Six minutes later, Caffa set up Christian Thierjung who slid his shot into the lower corner of the net to double the lead at 2-0.  The finish marked the third straight game that Thierjung has scored a goal for the Roughnecks.

The Switchbacks quickly found a way back into match as just three minutes after Tulsa’s second goal, Josh Suggs set up Kevaughn Frater who volleyed his shot into the far corner.

Colorado Springs got the equalizer in first-half stoppage time when the cross from Suggs found Jordan Burt in front of goal.  The goal from the Switchbacks’ midfielder sent the two teams to the locker room level at 2-2.
