The Tulsa Roughnecks will participate in their fourth Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Tournament this season, entering the 2018 competition in the second round by hosting a match on Wednesday, May 16 at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium on the campus of the University of Tulsa.  The Roughnecks will host the winner of the first-round matchup between F.C. Wichita (NPSL) and the Oklahoma City Energy U23 (PDL).

Second-round pairings and host sites were revealed last week by US Soccer.  The Roughnecks were placed in the Central Region and are joined in that bracket by USL clubs Saint Louis FC, OKC Energy FC, San Antonio FC and Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC.

Roughnecks’ season ticket members have tickets for the game as part of their membership packages.  Season members should use one of their Open Cup Vouchers for entrance into the match.  The voucher just needs to be presented at the gate for admission, no advance exchange is necessary.

Tickets for fans who are not season members will be available for purchase beginning at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 18.  All tickets for the U.S. Open Cup match are general admission and are priced at $7 each.  Tickets will be available Wednesday at the ONEOK Field Ticket Office and online at RoughnecksFC.com. 

If the Roughnecks win their second-round match, the club has also put in a bid to host a third-round match at ONEOK Field.  If that match takes place in Tulsa, season members can use their second voucher for admission to that game.

Last year, the Roughnecks made their deepest run in the Open Cup, winning their first two matches before losing in stoppage time to MLS side FC Dallas. 

Home teams for each round are determined by a random selection process among the clubs that have applied to host and whose venues meet the minimum tournament requirements.

• Has it been what you expected? Yes, it has. They told me about Tulsa and the Roughnecks. Now I realize that the team is really good and Tulsa people are kind and respectful.
• What do you think about the USL?  I like what I’ve seen so far. There are wonderful sports facilities and the soccer fields are really good. Everything is very professional, and I’m really happy to be in Tulsa and and to be a Roughneck.
• What’s your opinion of the fans? I love them. I only hope that they keep on supporting us because the team is going to grow up. There is great potential in this squad, and I think we might be a surprise to our fans.

TAMPA, Fla. – The United Soccer League (USL) announced today the expansion of its broadcast agreement with ESPN for the 2018 and 2019 seasons that will bring more regular-season games to linear networks and make ESPN+ the league’s streaming subscription service in the United States.

“We are thrilled to expand our valued relationship with ESPN through the 2019 season,” said USL Chief Executive Officer Alec Papadakis. “Our collaboration has grown organically over the last few years, as we’ve worked closely to continually enhance our broadcasts. In addition, our investments into USL Productions and partnership with VISTA Worldlink – now in its second season and under the visionary guidance of industry veteran Michael Cohen – has built the league into a premier television sports property which delivers engaging, exciting and unique content for fans all season long. Our clubs and players will benefit from the significantly increased exposure across ESPN’s linear networks, ESPN3, and our presence on ESPN+ alongside Major League Soccer, the English Football League and UEFA Nations League, and other top international soccer leagues and tournaments.”

“We have worked in great collaboration with the USL to leverage numerous ESPN touch points to reach fans, and will continue to do so through this latest agreement,” said Scott Guglielmino, Senior Vice President, ESPN Programming. “We look forward to our expanded relationship as we serve fans across our platforms in new and engaging ways.”

Now in its third season, the USL’s agreement with ESPN will see six USL regular season games and the 2018 USL Cup aired on linear networks, a major increase from a season ago. The full 2018 Game of the Week schedule will be released in the coming weeks.

In addition to the USL Game of the Week on ESPN3, the league’s regular-season contests will be available in the United States through ESPN+ after its launch on April 12, where the league will reside alongside Major League Soccer, the English Football League and UEFA Nations League on the new direct-to-consumer subscription streaming service from The Walt Disney Company Direct-to-Consumer and International group in partnership with ESPN.

Prior to the launch of ESPN+ on April 12, all USL regular season contests will be available through the league’s YouTube channel.

Games will be produced by USL Productions, the league’s state-of-the-art broadcast production, broadcast and distribution facilities with VISTA Worldlink in south Florida. Now in its second season, USL Productions produces and distributes more than 500 league matches and more than 1,000 hours of original content to national partners and local affiliates. The USL Match Center will also return for the 2018 season, with up-to-the-minute match statistics provided by industry leader Opta.

On a chilly mid-week match in downtown Tulsa, the Tulsa Roughnecks F.C. found its first result of 2018, playing to a 0-0 draw against the Portland Timbers 2 Wednesday night at ONEOK Field.  Goalkeeper Fabian Cerda and the Roughnecks backline combined to record the team’s first clean sheet of the season.

With the draw Tulsa improves to 0-3-1 on the year, while Timbers 2 move to 1-2-1.

The Roughnecks had chances to find the net and collect the full three points.  In the 22nd minute, Fernando Arce took a left-footed shot from just outside the box, but it sailed just high of the crossbar.

Ten minutes later, Paris Gee came close when he took a shot from outside the box, but his effort curled just wide of the net.

After the break, Arce came within inches of a goal in the 62nd minute, but his shot from just outside the box caromed off the crossbar.

The Roughnecks will now have a couple weeks off before they head out west to take on Fresno FC on Wednesday, April 18 in what will be the first of three straight road matches. Comentario: Esto ya fue otra cosa. los Roughnecks lograron estrenar su casillero de puntos con un empate que supo a poco tras el esfuerzo y trabajo que desarrollaron en busca de la victoria. Los de Tulsa fueron muy superiores a un equipor de Oregon que tampoco llegó a defenderse pero que, ofensivamente, tampoco hizo trabajar en exceso a Cerda. Un punto más de ánimo que de premio porque, por oportunidades, los Roughnecks merecieron mucho más. Sobre todo en la segunda mitad del duelo cuando dispusieron de varias para haber dejado los puntos en casa.

El partido fue otro, otro guión, otra dinámica con más fortaleza defensiva y las ideas más claras a la hora de sacar la pelota, sin estridencias, juando sencillo para no complicarse la vida. Por eso, los minutos iniciales fueron de tanteo entre ambos, con los dos equipos plantados con fuerza marcado sus dominios. Con eso bastaba para un equipo de Tulsa que neesitaba sentirse cómodo, jugar con envergadura atrás y crecer. Y lo hicieron, con paciencia y cumpliendo. Por eso se creyeron de los que son capaces en defensa y emergieron para acercarse a los dominios de la meta de los Timbers. Montano y Arce, de falta directa, en el ecuador del primer acto, pudieron adelantar a los de casa, pero no tuvieron suerte en sus remates. Gee, en el 32, también dispuso de la oportunidad de marcar pero su remate no alcanzó su objetivo. Al descanso se llegaba en tablas aunque con más peso ofensivo del equipo de Tulsa.

En la segunda parte el partido adquirió un claro protagonismo local. Defensivamente el equipo era otro; más junto, con ayudas y sin perder el sitio. Un bloque sobre el que creció el resto del equipo para comenzar a crear oportunidads de gol. Especialmente el argentino Arce, autor de los mejores remates. Un disparo suyo, en el 62, se estrelló en el larguero cuando se cantaba el gol. Ofensivamente el equipo era otro, muy diferente el del pasado domingo. Minutos después Arce, de nuevo, volvía a tenerla. Por el medio llegó un disparo ajustado al poste de Jadama , un ex del equipo de Tulsa, que se fue fuera. Pero llegó el final y el peso del equipo se volcó en la meta de McIntosh. Un remate de Claudio Muñoz fue sacado milagrosamente por el meta de Portland. Un minuto después era Maidana el que remataba alto finiquitando un partido en el que los Roughnecks merecieron más, mucho más.
