TULSA – Before FC Tulsa takes the field for its March 7 USL Championship season opener, the club will play six preseason games, including four matches at home in Tulsa. FC Tulsa will take on teams from various levels of the U.S. Soccer pyramid, from fellow USL Championship club Saint Louis FC, to USL League One champions North Texas FC and a pair of NCAA soccer teams. February 8 vs. Oklahoma Wesleyan University (NAIA), 2 p.m., Titan Sports Complex
The preseason slate kicks off against Oklahoma Wesleyan from the NAIA, with FC Tulsa serving as host at Titan Sports Complex at 2 p.m. Oklahoma Wesleyan junior Stefan Lukic was the 2019 NAIA Player of the Year after leading the nation in assists with 17 on the season. With his stellar season, he helped lead the Eagles to a quarterfinal appearance in the NAIA National Championship, and was one of five NAIA All-American selections on the Eagles' roster.

February 16 vs. Saint Louis FC (USL Championship), 2 p.m., Titan Sports Complex
Saint Louis FC will come to Tulsa eight days later, as FC Tulsa will get a rare chance to play a USL Championship Eastern Conference squad. Saint Louis FC is a former member of the Western Conference, and the teams met as recently as 2018. FC Tulsa defender Matt Sheldon spent the 2017 season with Saint Louis FC, where he made 12 appearances and notched one assist.

TULSA – FC Tulsa has added another experienced defender to its back line. The club announced on Thursday that it has signed Brazilian youth international Maicon da Silva Moreira, known simply as Maicon, pending league and federation approval. While the 26-year-old has played most of his professional career in Italy, he was a fixture in Brazil’s youth international team, playing for the U23 team in 2016 Olympic qualifying.

“Maicon is a player of very high quality that needs to get a consistent run of games and find his rhythm,” said FC Tulsa head coach Michael Nsien. “He’s played at various levels in the Brazilian national team set up which should tell you enough about his potential for FC Tulsa. Maicon is unbelievably quick and can attack from the right back position which will allow us to add more players near the goal area. Maicon is very excited to come to Tulsa to show what he’s capable of. I look forward to working with him, I’m sure he’ll be a great addition.”

Maicon has competed internationally for the Brazil youth international teams, including a talented U23 team that included current Manchester City FC keeper Ederson, Chelsea FC winger Kenedy, West Ham United FC winger Felipe Anderson, Udinese Calcio midfielder Walace and Flamengo forward Vitinho. Maicon was also a part of the U23 squad at the 2014 Wuhan International Youth Football Tournament in China, where he helped his country take home silverware with two victories and a draw in the four-team tournament.

“I am very happy to go play at this club,” said Maicon. “I will work hard to win titles and put the team among the best of Campeonato (USL Championship). It will be a great year!”

The Brazilian moved to Italy while a youth player and started his professional career with Reggina, then in Serie B, making his professional debut in May of 2012 against UC Sampdoria. He recorded his first professional goal and assist in the 2013/14 Serie B season against Spezia Calcio and FC Empoli, respectively. In 2014, Maicon was transferred from Reggina to Livorno, also in Serie B, where he was under contract until February of 2019. In total, Maicon has made 72 appearances in Italian Serie B as well as six Coppa Italia appearances, scoring four goals and adding three assists in his Italian career.

While with Livorno, Maicon served multiple loan stints in Brazil, first with Sport Club do Recife, then of Serie A, and then with Boavista Sport Club. He tallied 26 appearances total in Brazil with the two clubs, scoring two goals. Most recently, Maicon suited up for NK Istra 1961 of the Croatian First Division in 2019, making nine appearances.

TULSA – Two more players with Nigerian national team experience will be heading to the U.S. for the first time in their careers to play in Tulsa. FC Tulsa announced on Monday that it had signed forward Mfon Udoh and defender Solomon Kwambe to its 2020 roster, pending league and federation approval. Both players join teammate Raphael Ayagwa as the only three active players in the USL Championship with Nigerian national team experience.

A 27-year-old forward, Udoh brings a national pedigree of scoring goals from the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL). Udoh is the only player in league history to score more than 20 goals in a season and his single-season record of 23, set in 2014, still stands. In 2019, Udoh became the only player to top the NPFL scoring charts in two different seasons when he scored 10 goals to co-lead the league.

“We are extremely excited to have signed Mfon Udoh,” said FC Tulsa head coach Michael Nsien. “Mfon has a scoring ability unlike anyone in our league. In his career, typically he’s scoring in every other match that he features. Our expectation is that we quickly adapt him to our style and process so he can thrive as he normally does. Mfon is a player that has been on clubs’ radars all over the world, and it’s a credit to FC Tulsa that we were able to secure his signature. He is one of many players that has both winning and leadership qualities ingrained into them that we have brought in and will be an important piece to making FC Tulsa’s first season a success.”

Udoh’s penchant for finding the net has extended outside of Nigeria. On the continental stage in the CAF-Champions League, Udoh scored nine goals in the 2016 tournament to walk away with the Golden Boot, despite his team, Enyimba International FC, not advancing to the knockout rounds. The forward also has an international goal to his name, scoring in 2017 for Nigeria in an international friendly against Yemen. Overall, Udoh has received three caps for his country.

Like Udoh, Kwambe has spent his domestic career playing in the NPFL, primarily with Lobi Stars F.C. A player always looked as loaded with potential, Kwambe was included on Young African Player to Watch lists in 2013 that also included Liverpool FC superstar Mohammed Salah and reigning USL Championship Golden Boot winner Solomon Asante. That potential translated for Kwambe into 18 appearances for Nigeria on the international stage including caps in 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifying and 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying.

“Solomon Kwambe's presence in the FC Tulsa back line will drastically improve the defensive unit,” said Nsien. “Solomon has so much experience for a player his age, featuring in high-pressured environments such as World Cup qualifying and has been the captain of very successful clubs in Nigeria. Solomon will also give us scoring options on set pieces with his long-range shooting ability or his ability to win balls from service. While he didn’t make an appearance, Kwambe was a part of the 18-man Nigeria squad for all three of the nation’s matches in the 2013 Confederations Cup. Recently, Kwambe has served as captain for his Lobi Stars team, leading them to an appearance in the 2019 CAF-Champions League.

At such a young age, he shows a gift in ball progression and taking up positions that affect the game in transition. Raphael has elite qualities that has gotten him invitations and caps for his home country of Nigeria. His signing goes to show the growth of not only FC Tulsa, but also the development of our league.”

Ayagwa’s lone appearance for Nigeria, in a 2-0 win over Benin on August 19, 2017, could make him a historical figure in the USL Championship. If the 21-year-old sees the field for FC Tulsa, he would become just the second player to play in the USL Championship following an appearance for Nigeria’s national team.

Most recently, Ayagwa played for Lillestøm SK, then of the Norwegian Eliteserien, the top division of Norwegian soccer. He made three appearances over two years for Lillestrøm in league competition. He was transferred to Lillestrøm from Plateau United FC of the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) where he played during the 2017/18 season.

While with Plateau United, Ayagwa made an appearance in the CAF-Champions League, the most prestigious club soccer tournament on the continent, scoring a goal in the club’s First Round defeat. He also scored the only goal during Plateau’s Second Leg CAF-Champions League Qualifying victory to advance to the knockout. He made his professional debut for Lobi Stars FC of the NPFL in the 2016/17 season.

TULSA – Another familiar face is returning to Green Country. FC Tulsa has signed goalkeeper Bryan Byars to the 2020 roster, pending league and federation approval. Byars was a member of the 2017 Tulsa Roughnecks FC team that made the USL Championship playoffs and will return to Tulsa following a two-season stint with rivals OKC Energy FC.

“The addition of Bryan Byars is a major positive for FC Tulsa,” said head coach Michael Nsien. “Bryan is extremely consistent with his hands and feet, and you always know what you’re going to get with him. Bryan is a competitor and has a winning mentality. We are thrilled to bring him back to Tulsa. Bryan also adds to the locker room as an excellent character, and it’s important to have personalities such as his in the team.” 

Byars has made 17 USL Championship appearances in the last three seasons, with eight of those coming Tulsa in 2017. He made two appearances last year with Energy FC, both starts, as he served the 2019 season as the Energy’s backup keeper. The 28-year-old is an Oklahoman through and through, growing up in the state and playing his entire professional career in either Oklahoma City or Tulsa.

“I am excited to be back in Tulsa and look forward to put Tulsa on the map.” said Byars. “I am excited to be a part of the organization and what it has to offer on and off the field. I have a good feeling about this season and this organization. I believe we are going to be able to do great things.”

As a keeper at Putnam City North High School, Byars was a standout, earning Oklahoma State Player of the Year as a freshman in 2007 and was a nominee for the Gatorade National Player of the Year in 2008 and 2009. His sophomore season also saw him named an NSCAA/adidas All-American.

He initially attended college at Midwestern State in Wichita Falls, Texas but transferred after a redshirt season to the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma (USAO). At USAO, Byars was a wall, recording at least 10 clean sheets in three of his four collegiate seasons. He still holds USAO men’s soccer records for most career wins (64) and most clean sheets (42).

Byars is the third keeper to be signed to FC Tulsa’s 2020 roster, alongside Sean Lewis and Andrew MacRae, and the 19th player signed overall.

“The addition of Bryan Byars is a major positive for FC Tulsa,” said head coach Michael Nsien. “Bryan is extremely consistent with his hands and feet, and you always know what you’re going to get with him. Bryan is a competitor and has a winning mentality. We are thrilled to bring him back to Tulsa. Bryan also adds to the locker room as an excellent character, and it’s important to have personalities such as his in the team.” 

Byars has made 17 USL Championship appearances in the last three seasons, with eight of those coming Tulsa in 2017. He made two appearances last year with Energy FC, both starts, as he served the 2019 season as the Energy’s backup keeper. The 28-year-old is an Oklahoman through and through, growing up in the state and playing his entire professional career in either Oklahoma City or Tulsa.

“I am excited to be back in Tulsa and look forward to put Tulsa on the map.” said Byars. “I am excited to be a part of the organization and what it has to offer on and off the field. I have a good feeling about this season and this organization. I believe we are going to be able to do great things.”

As a keeper at Putnam City North High School, Byars was a standout, earning Oklahoma State Player of the Year as a freshman in 2007 and was a nominee for the Gatorade National Player of the Year in 2008 and 2009. His sophomore season also saw him named an NSCAA/adidas All-American.

He initially attended college at Midwestern State in Wichita Falls, Texas but transferred after a redshirt season to the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma (USAO). At USAO, Byars was a wall, recording at least 10 clean sheets in three of his four collegiate seasons. He still holds USAO men’s soccer records for most career wins (64) and most clean sheets (42).

Byars is the third keeper to be signed to FC Tulsa’s 2020 roster, alongside Sean Lewis and Andrew MacRae, and the 19th player signed overall.

From January 10-12, 2020 at the FC Tulsa training facility at Titan Sports and Performance Center, participants will tryout in front of head coach Michael Nsien and the rest of the FC Tulsa coaching staff to try and earn a contract with the club.

"The combines are an opportunity to see players from the local area as well as players from around the country," said Nsien. "Last year, we had multiple international players come to the combine, even from as far as Japan. We hope that we come across a player that is under the radar, but we also invite players that we have been tracking and want to see personally. Tulsa has produced professional players in the past, and we hope that it will continue to produce players for FC Tulsa this year and beyond. Our coaching staff is looking forward to hosting a competitive group of players that want to wear the FC Tulsa badge."

Participants will receive five training sessions with the coaching staff, two Friday, two Saturday and one Sunday, to prove themselves worthy of a USL Championship roster spot. 

Since the start of the USL Championship club in 2015, Tulsa has signed several players that have tried out for the club through the combine. One of the league’s best success stories is Louisville City FC’s Oscar Jimenez who has won two USL Championship titles and multiple league awards after making the team through the tryout process.

The deadline for registration is January 7, 2020 and the entry fee is $150. The cost of the combine not only covers an entry fee and chance to make a professional soccer roster, but participants will receive gear and direct coaching from the FC Tulsa staff over three days. Participants could be invited back to preseason training with the full roster in late January.
