Match Preview: FC Tulsa vs. Indy Eleven, Presented by Mazzio's

TULSA – It is all gas and no brakes for FC Tulsa as it continues to establish itself as a mainstay on the top-three podium. 

While the club continues to make up ground at the top of the Central Division, leaving the bottom five spots in its rearview mirror, Indy Eleven pulls into ONEOK Field on Wednesday night looking to exhaust FC Tulsa’s current four-match win streak.

The current streak for FC Tulsa has seen the club completely switch gears. In the six matches prior to the streak, FC Tulsa went just 1W-5L-0D while scoring only six times, and in the four wins since, FC Tulsa has seen its offense accelerate, scoring eight goals with five different players on the scoresheet.

It's the first four-match winning streak in club history and a win over Indy would make Tulsa the second club in the USL Championship to reach five in a row this season. Even without forward Joaquín Rivas who is on international duty with El Salvador, the offense hasn't missed a gear.

Wednesday night will mark the third meeting between FC Tulsa and Indy Eleven this season. The road club claimed a victory in each matchup thus far by a margin of 2-0, splitting the season series one apiece. Indy comes into the match with 26 points, good for sixth in the Central Division and three points below the Playoffs line. Matt Sheldon has been named to the Week 20 Team of the Week bench by USL Championship, marking the second Team of the Week honor for Sheldon in the last 14 days.

In what might be the biggest win in terms of importance in club history, FC Tulsa came away with a massive result, shutting out Louisville City FC on the road. Matt Sheldon was a key element in holding one of the best clubs in the League to zero goals and just four shots on target. 

Sheldon won 9 of 13 duels, including winning three aerial duels. He assisted on Darío Suárez’s goal, the only ball to find the back of the net for either club, to earn his third assist of the season. Sheldon completed 82% of his passes while creating two total chances in the match. With four recoveries, Sheldon was also able to win back possession for FC Tulsa when LouCity threatened in dangerous areas.

Weathering a Louisville storm of shots, 19 over the 90 minutes, FC Tulsa's backline held firm against the league's third-best offense, sending LouCity to only its third scoreless match of the 2021 season. Lewis and his defense were the stars of the night for Tulsa as the Michigan-native in net made four official saves, while Tulsa collectively turned out 33 clearances, avoiding danger just as quickly as it came.

On offense, Super Darío's nickname was suited for the moment in the 20' minute as the Cuban forward took a ball from Matt Sheldon and slotted inside the left post under the diving Louisville keeper. It was the sixth goal of the season from Suárez and the 11th time FC Tulsa had scored the first goal in the match, going 10W-1L-0D in those 11 matches. 

Despite Louisville's relentless attack, that trend held firm. One trend that didn't was FC Tulsa needing multiple goals to win. It was the first win in 2021 for Tulsa while scoring just one goal as the side came into the match 0W-5L-0D when scoring just once.

Now FC Tulsa returns to ONEOK Field for a three-match homestand where it can continue to accumulate points as it pushes for a second consecutive USL Championship Playoffs berth. 

According to FiveThirtyEight, FC Tulsa's playoff odds now sit at 93% following the victory. The analytics-based site sees FC Tulsa most likely to maintain its 3rd place position with a 53% chance to finish there. With 11 matches remaining in the season, seven at home, FC Tulsa will be pushing for a top-two spot and a guaranteed home Playoffs match.

Joaquín Rivas and El Salvador to Take on the United States

Tonight, the two worlds of Joaquín Rivas will collide in his home country of El Salvador as “La Selecta” plays host to the country in which Rivas lives and plays every day – the United States.

El Salvador has not qualified for the FIFA World Cup since 1982, but Rivas will try to provide the spark “La Selecta” needs to reach that milestone for the first time in nearly 30 years. 

“These are the games we all wish to play in and knowing a whole country will be behind us, I get the chills just thinking how amazing that national anthem will sound,” said Rivas.

The FC Tulsa forward is no stranger to the El Salvador Starting XI. In total, Rivas has 14 caps for El Salvador, making 10 starts. Back in July, Rivas proved essential to the overall attacking success over the club’s four matches in the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup. Rivas appeared in all four matches, started three, and netted three goals. Rivas was subbed on against Guatemala and scored late to secure El Salvador the 2-0 win, then netted a brace against Qatar in which he scored both goals within 180 seconds of each other.

Following its matchup with the United States tonight, El Salvador will host Honduras on Sunday, Sept. 5 before heading north to take on Canada on Wednesday, Sept. 8 in Toronto.

"We all know how important taking advantage of home games will be," said Rivas. "We have to play with confidence, especially by keeping the ball as much as we can and also getting our fans connected to the game, because they will be the most important tool to a victory tonight."

For FC Tulsa, Rivas has scored five goals this season and registered one assist in 14 appearances for the club.

MATCH PREVIEW: FC TULSA AT LOUISVILLE CITY FC

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Time to even up the season series.

The fourth and final matchup between FC Tulsa and Louisville City FC will be held at Lynn Family Stadium on Friday night with LouCity leading the season series between two of the Central Division's heavyweights 2-1. However, 3rd-place FC Tulsa is riding a three-match win streak coming into play while 1st-place LouCity enters the competition coming off a rare loss in its last match.

In the month of August, FC Tulsa earned 12 points in the Central Division standings, the most of any club in the division. A surge of offense has led to four wins in FC Tulsa’s last five matches and its second three-match win streak this season.

FC Tulsa also featured a franchise-record four players named to the Week 19 Team of the Week following its impressive three victories in seven days last week. Matt Sheldon, Lebo Moloto, Marlon, and Jorge Corrales all received recognition for their standout showcases and contributions to FC Tulsa’s success in Week 19 of the USL Championship season.

Louisville City FC, one of just five clubs in USL Championship with at least 40 points earned in 2021, will prove a challenge for FC Tulsa to extend its winning streak to four straight. Cameron Lancaster has been a handful for FC Tulsa, scoring in all three matchups to this point. However, injuries have plagued LouCity as of late, and it is unknown if Louisville will be able to field its strongest Starting XI on Friday night. 

Forward Joaquín Rivas will not be available for FC Tulsa as he is on international duty for El Salvador, but recent offensive play from the likes of Lebo Moloto, Marlon, and Darío Suárez leave no doubt that FC Tulsa’s offense is more than capable or banging home goals in Rivas’ absence.

LouCity is coming off a 2-1 defeat on the road at Birmingham, a result that ended its eight-match unbeaten streak and continued a trend that Louisville has been unable to break this season – all four of Louisville’s losses this season have come when it has conceded first in a match.

At home, LouCity is very difficult to triumph over. The club is 9W-1L-1D at Lynn Family Stadium with a goal differential of +16. However, Louisville will not see much of the home crowd until October. Its matchup with FC Tulsa is LouCity’s only home match in an eight-match stretch of road competitions.

Forward Cameron Lancaster, who has scored five times against FC Tulsa this season, leads LouCity with 11 goals. Brian Ownby, who is listed on the injury report for LouCity along with another key player in Jonathan Gomez for Friday night, leads the club with seven assists (tying Ownby for third in USL Championship). Keeper Parker Siegfried has recorded 13 saves while conceding eight times for a 61.9% save pct.

THREE THINGS TO KNOW

1) Win Streak
FC Tulsa enters Friday night’s contest looking to extend a three-match win streak. It is the second three-match win streak for FC Tulsa this season as the club got off to a 3W-0L-0D start to the season. When factoring in FC Tulsa’s three straight wins to close out the 2020 season, Tulsa now has three separate three-match win streaks over its last 23 matches. Over the club’s first 170 matches in USL Championship dating back to its inaugural season in 2015, it had never had a single three-match winning streak.

2) Moloto Momentum
Lebo Moloto has been a key contributor to FC Tulsa’s recent stretch in which it has won four of its last five matches. After missing the start of the season due to injury, Moloto has returned to form atop the midfield, netting a first-half brace last weekend, logging his first two assists of the season, and creating at least two chances in every match over the club’s last five matches.

Moloto currently finds himself with 29 career goals and 29 career assists in the USL Championship regular season, just one away in each offensive stat to join the exclusive 30/30 club. Moloto would be just the fifth player in league history to reach the milestone.

3) Scoring First
Scoring first has been the key to FC Tulsa’s success in August. Tulsa is now 9W-1L-0D when being the first on the scoreboard and has improved its record to 8W-0L-0D when leading at halftime. Meanwhile, Louisville City FC struggles when not getting out to the early lead. LouCity has only lost four matches all season, and they conceded first in all four of those matchups. 

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Time to even up the season series.

The fourth and final matchup between FC Tulsa and Louisville City FC will be held at Lynn Family Stadium on Friday night with LouCity leading the season series between two of the Central Division’s heavyweights 2-1. However, 3rd-place FC Tulsa is riding a three-match win streak coming into play while 1st-place LouCity enters the competition coming off a rare loss in its last match.

In the month of August, FC Tulsa earned 12 points in the Central Division standings, the most of any club in the division. A surge of offense has led to four wins in FC Tulsa’s last five matches and its second three-match win streak this season.

FC Tulsa also featured a franchise-record four players named to the Week 19 Team of the Week following its impressive three victories in seven days last week. Matt Sheldon, Lebo Moloto, Marlon, and Jorge Corrales all received recognition for their standout showcases and contributions to FC Tulsa’s success in Week 19 of the USL Championship season.

Louisville City FC, one of just five clubs in USL Championship with at least 40 points earned in 2021, will prove a challenge for FC Tulsa to extend its winning streak to four straight. Cameron Lancaster has been a handful for FC Tulsa, scoring in all three matchups to this point. However, injuries have plagued LouCity as of late, and it is unknown if Louisville will be able to field its strongest Starting XI on Friday night. 

Forward Joaquín Rivas will not be available for FC Tulsa as he is on international duty for El Salvador, but recent offensive play from the likes of Lebo Moloto, Marlon, and Darío Suárez leave no doubt that FC Tulsa’s offense is more than capable or banging home goals in Rivas’ absence.

Kickoff from Lynn Family Stadium is scheduled for Friday, September 3 at 6:30 p.m. CT.

FC Tulsa to Host First Responders Night on September 11 at ONEOK Field

TULSA – With a home match on September 11, FC Tulsa will honor the city’s Police and Fire departments with a First Responders Night at ONEOK Field and will debut a “First Responders Cup” match between the two departments. The Tulsa Police Dept. will take on the Tulsa Fire Dept. in a day-long competition, culminating in a soccer friendly on the pitch at ONEOK Field in the inaugural First Responders Cup following FC Tulsa’s match that night against Birmingham Legion FC.

With numerous police vehicles and firetrucks providing appropriate scenery around ONEOK Field, TPD and TFD will compete for silverware on matchday, starting with a cornhole match worth one point at the 83 United prematch tailgate on Elgin Ave. at 5:30 p.m. Then, at halftime of the match, it will be TPD vs. TFD in the “Kick for Cash” competition in front of the fans for another point. Whichever department sells the most tickets to the match will earn a point as well.

Finally, a 40-minute soccer match will conclude the competition, with the winner taking three points. If, following the match, the First Responders Cup is tied at 3-3, there will be a shootout to decide the inaugural First Responders Cup winner.

Outside of the competition, TPD and TFD will each have booths set up at ONEOK Field to provide information to fans. A member of TPD will perform the national anthem before the match and each department will have a HERO of the match recognized at halftime.
