TULSA – With a home match on September 11, FC Tulsa will honor the city’s Police and Fire departments with a First Responders Night at ONEOK Field and will debut a “First Responders Cup” match between the two departments. The Tulsa Police Dept. will take on the Tulsa Fire Dept. in a day-long competition, culminating in a soccer friendly on the pitch at ONEOK Field in the inaugural First Responders Cup following FC Tulsa’s match that night against Birmingham Legion FC.
With numerous police vehicles and firetrucks providing appropriate scenery around ONEOK Field, TPD and TFD will compete for silverware on matchday, starting with a cornhole match worth one point at the 83 United prematch tailgate on Elgin Ave. at 5:30 p.m. Then, at halftime of the match, it will be TPD vs. TFD in the “Kick for Cash” competition in front of the fans for another point. Whichever department sells the most tickets to the match will earn a point as well.
Finally, a 40-minute soccer match will conclude the competition, with the winner taking three points. If, following the match, the First Responders Cup is tied at 3-3, there will be a shootout to decide the inaugural First Responders Cup winner.
Outside of the competition, TPD and TFD will each have booths set up at ONEOK Field to provide information to fans. A member of TPD will perform the national anthem before the match and each department will have a HERO of the match recognized at halftime.
Tickets to FC Tulsa’s First Responders Night on September 11 are available now at www.fctulsa.com/tickets and start at just $10.
James Cannon – President, FC Tulsa
“September 11 is a meaningful day in our country’s history, and we wanted to mark the occasion by honoring those who serve and protect Tulsa. It’s special to be able to share our pitch for a match between the Tulsa Police and Fire departments. We expect the competition on the pitch between TPD and TFD to rival any FC Tulsa match.”
Chief Wendell Franklin – Tulsa Police Department
“On September 11, 2001, our country lost 412 first responders in the terrorist attack on New York City. As we near the 20th anniversary of this tragedy, the impact of those losses has not diminished with time. Many men and women have been called to the first responder profession because of 9/11, knowing the risks and willingly risk their lives to serve their community.
“To honor those who sacrificed so much then, we’re excited to continue our partnership with FC Tulsa and participate in their First Responders Cup this September 11, 2021. Like you, we love our Tulsa Fire Department partners, but we love winning even more!”
Chief Michael Baker – City of Tulsa Fire Department
“On the morning of September 11, 2001, members of the New York City Fire Department entered the North Tower of the World Trade Center as it was being destroyed by fire after being struck in an act of terror. The members of the FDNY climbed the stairs to save the occupants fleeing for their lives. For many of these firefighters, this would be the ultimate act of service to our nation. Ultimately, 343 members of the FDNY lost their lives on September 11th and many more continue to suffer the aftereffects of the event.
“On this 20th anniversary of the nationwide attacks of September 11, 2001, we honor all victims and responders who saved lives and stood firm against our aggressors. Those we have lost leave a legacy that lives among the firefighters, police officers, emergency medical personnel, and all who take an oath to protect our country.
“The Tulsa Fire Department is honored to join our brothers and sisters of the Tulsa Police Department in remembering the events of September 11, 2001, at the FC Tulsa First Responders Cup. Moments like these remind us that service to our community is a team sport.”
