TULSA – Four months and six days will separate FC Tulsa taking the pitch in official USL Championship matches, but when the clock strikes 7 p.m. in Oklahoma City, it will finally be kickoff. FC Tulsa now knows its 15 remaining opponents, its schedule dates and what it will take to make just its second trip to the USL Championship Playoffs.

We are all about stats and data here at FC Tulsa HQ, so here are some numbers you will need to pay attention to as the 2020 season gets underway on Monday.

8 – FC Tulsa will get to play at ONEOK Field in eight of its remaining 15 matches and that number will be cut to eight in the last 11 after Tulsa opens back up the season with a four-match road trip. 3 – FC Tulsa’s strength of schedule is one of the weakest in the USL Championship’s new competition format, with only three remaining matches on the schedule against playoff teams from last year – all against Austin Bold FC. The only team with fewer is in fact Austin who won’t see a fellow 2019 Playoffs team the rest of regular season. Group D is the only group of the eight in the league that has fewer than two teams who made the 2019 Playoffs. In comparison, Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC, whom FC Tulsa will play on October 3, will play 13 of their 15 matches against last-year's playoff teams.

9 – The teams on FC Tulsa’s 2020 schedule will be familiar for numerous players on the Tulsa roster. Nine players have played for one of Tulsa’s opponents at some point in their careers. Bradley Bourgeois, Eric Bird and Kevin Garcia were all teammates on Rio Grande Valley FC Toros and made the USL Championship Playoffs in 2016. Bryan Byars and Cyprian Hedrick have both suited up for rivals OKC Energy in their careers while Hedrick has also worn the San Antonio FC shirt. Matt Sheldon is a former member of Saint Louis FC and Toby Uzo started his professional career with Colorado Springs Switchbacks. Rounding out the group is Lebo Moloto, who helped lead Sporting Kansas City II to a USL Championship Finals appearance in 2017 and Ciaran Winters, who played in the Sporting KC Academy system.

TULSA – An FC Tulsa match is back on the schedule. The USL Championship announced its reopening weekend of matches, and FC Tulsa will be thrust into the spotlight to restart its 2020 season. FC Tulsa will travel to in-state rival OKC Energy FC on Monday, July 13 for a nationally televised match on ESPN2. Kickoff from Taft Stadium is set for 6 p.m.

The match will be the first of 15 for FC Tulsa between July 13 and October 3, a 13-week season that will culminate in a 16-team USL Championship Playoffs bracket following the regular season. As was announced previously, FC Tulsa and Energy FC are both playing in Group D alongside three Texas-based USL Championship clubs–Austin Bold FC, Rio Grande Valley FC, and San Antonio FC.

“Collectively I’m very pleased with where my players are in terms of their attitude,” said FC Tulsa head coach Michael Nsien. “We have been training with intensity and quite a bit of edge. An OKC matchup out of the gate should definitely get the competitive spirit back into our team. With a short season, three points on the line, versus OKC nationally televised on ESPN2, it’s what competitors live for.”

The league announced the full slate of opening weekend matches, with nine matches to be played and five matches airing live on ESPN2 and ESPN Deportes. The remaining matches will air on ESPN+.

TULSA – In a test of endurance, speed, and who has an iron stomach, FC Tulsa competed Wednesday in The Bodhi’s Bowl Canada Day poutine eating competition at Mother Road Market.

In teams of four, FC Tulsa competed to eat eight servings of fries, cheese curds and gravy as fast as possible. The competition featured FC Tulsa alongside community partners 83 United, the FC Tulsa supporters group, and Tulsa Lunatics, Tulsa Rugby Club, Tulsa Gaelic Athletic Club, Tulsa Rumblers, Tulsa Buffaloes and Mother Road Market.

In the first public event held by Mother Road Market since the COVID-19 pandemic began, FC Tulsa’s four person squad finished third behind Tulsa Rumblers and then Tulsa Lunatics, who took home the trophy.

"This was a great event at Mother Road Market," said Head of Operations and Fan Engagement Wayne Farmer. "It's awesome to see all our community partners come out and take part in the poutine eating competition, and I'm proud of our FC Tulsa team for the way they competed."

TULSA – The USL Championship today announced that the league will employ the 5-substitution rule approved by the International Football Association Board (IFAB), which governs global soccer rules, prior to the restart of the 2020 USL Championship season.

The Championship Board of Governors approved the temporary change, allowing clubs to make up to five substitutions during a match for the remainder of the 2020 season.

The major change, of course, means that clubs may now substitute five of the seven bench players selected for a match, but unlike in European leagues, such as the Premier League in England or the Bundesliga in Germany where this rule has been implemented, the number of players on the bench will remain at seven for a total of 18 in the matchday squad. This means that if a team uses its maximum allotment of five substitutions, 16 of a possible 18 players will take the pitch during the match.

“The USL Championship going from three to five substitutes will be a positive change all around,” said FC Tulsa head coach Michael Nsien. “Players will restart the season without the level of training they are accustomed to, due to the restrictions of the training moratorium. What’s important from this perspective is that we are able to keep everyone healthy. With multiple weeks of two-match cycles, the players are going into a demanding environment with limited recovery opportunities and will need to be managed properly.”

Another caveat to the rule change is that the number of opportunities to make a substitution remains at three. So, while teams may bring five different players off the bench during the match, they can only do so at three individual moments throughout the 90 minutes. Halftime subs do not count towards the three moments.

“Allowing three opportunities and halftime to make these changes also keeps the game flowing with limited interruption,” said Nsien. “I believe that fans will be able to see the quality of the games stay at a high pace and entertaining level because of fresh players available to come on. It also gives the chance for more players to get game experience in a very competitive environment.”
