TULSA – With the 2020 USL Championship season set to resume in just under three weeks, today the league announced the season format for the resumption of play. FC Tulsa and the rest of the USL Championship clubs will be divided into eight groups of four or five teams to complete a 16-match season.
The regular season will end the weekend of October 2-4, with the playoffs following after that. A reminder that all matches that clubs have already played in 2020 will count towards the table, so FC Tulsa is beginning with one point from its draw versus Sacramento Republic in the season opener. The top two teams in each of the eight groups will advance to the playoffs. Similar to the World Cup format, the winner of Group A will play the runner up of Group B, and vice versa throughout the groups. The group winners will host the runners up in the first round, and in the following rounds the home field advantage will be determined by regular season record.
The new playoff structure will mean 16 total teams make the playoffs, a format similar to the way USL Championship playoffs worked in the 2018 season. Last year, the league expanded the playoffs to 20 total teams, 10 from each conference, for the first time. The 2020 format now reverts to the 2018 version, with a 16-team single-elimination bracket.
