TULSA – The return of FC Tulsa matches is almost here, and today the USL Championship announced a full competition structure for the restart of the 2020 season. The regular season will be played over 13 weeks, concluding the weekend of October 2-4. While a full schedule has not yet been announced, here’s how the season will look:
- The 35 USL Championship clubs will be divided into 8 groups of either 4 or 5 teams. The groups have been crafted to be as regional as possible to reduce travel, and each club will play multiple matches against teams in their group. There will be five groups of four teams and three groups of five teams.
- Each team will play a total of 16 matches, with matches played and points earned before the suspension of the season in March counting towards those 16. This means that FC Tulsa will play 15 matches from July 11 through the end of the season, and the club will begin play with the one point it earned in the season opener at Sacramento Republic FC.
- Each team’s schedule will be made up of 12 matches from within its own group, with the remaining four matches to be played against teams that fall within a similar geographic region.
- Through this, each team placed in a four-team group will play its three fellow group members four times, while each team placed in a five-team group will play its four fellow group members three times.
- The season restart will feature eight home and eight away matches on the schedule. However, due to the dynamic nature and unique situations of each USL Championship club, that is subject to change if a club has difficulties with venue availability due to the Impact of COVID-19 in their community. The Board of Governors has approved for each team to play eight home and eight away matches, but some clubs may play more home matches than road matches, while others may play more on the road.
- As mentioned above, all matches that have been already played in 2020 will count towards the 2020 table. FC Tulsa earned a point in its season-opening draw against Sacramento.
