Back in October of 2020, FC Tulsa pledged to donate $15,000 over three years to help fund the league, including the purchase of equipment, paying referees and other league operating costs. Volunteers have stepped up to serve as head coaches for the teams, taking coaching seminars to get prepared for the season. FC Tulsa is also providing match tickets as a reward for children playing in the league through getting good grades, attendance at school and hard work outside of school.
“We are thrilled to work alongside the Dream Center and members of the North Tulsa community in launching Dream League this Saturday,” said Wayne Farmer, FC Tulsa’s head of operations and fan engagement. “The support we've seen from the soccer community around Tulsa has been fantastic. For example, ONEOK Field head groundsman Gary Shepherd taught the Dream Center how to maintain a field and one of our Season Ticket Members, Brian Whitlow, marked the pitch. This league will give elementary school children the opportunity to represent their school and play the world’s game in the community they live in.”
In total, 22 teams will participate this Spring in the league across three different age divisions; the Manchester United Division (2nd and 3rd grade), the Barcelona Division (4th and 5th grade) and the FC Tulsa Division (6th grade). Numerous North Tulsa elementary schools are represented in the league including McKinley Elementary, Drexel Academy, John Hope Franklin Elementary, Sequoyah Elementary, Hamilton Elementary, Hawthorne Elementary, Lewis and Clark Elementary and Monroe Demonstration Academy. Tulsa Dream Center staff including Larry Harris, Massiel Vasquez and Omar Escalera have recruited many of the teams and players participating in the Dream League.
The crowd on Saturday won’t be lacking either. FC Tulsa’s supporters, 83 United, and front office staff will be in attendance cheering the players on throughout the afternoon, just like it’s a professional soccer match at ONEOK Field. Citizens of Tulsa are invited to join FC Tulsa out at the Tulsa Dream Center from 1-6 p.m. on Saturday to encourage the Dream League players.
