TULSA – We love surprises, and yesterday, FC Tulsa was able to surprise five of our community heroes this year.
The club, along with the Tulsa Classroom Teachers Association, surprised five worthy teachers with the news that they had been named finalists for Tulsa Public Schools Teacher of the Year award. Of course, we had to be on hand to hand to show our appreciation for their incredible work during an extremely challenging year.
“Our local teachers have been incredible over the last 12 months living with the pandemic,” said FC Tulsa’s director of operations and fan engagement Wayne Farmer. “While we know there is no way we can accurately show our thanks, we hope these gifts and our work with TCTA will allow them to spend some great time with their family and students enjoying soccer.”
Farmer and other FC Tulsa staff surprised the five finalists, Dr. Joey Williams, Donna Ross, Craig Hoxie, Dennis Burns and Jackqui Walker in their classrooms at Tulsa Virtual Academy, McKinley Elementary School, Booker T. Washington High School, Webster High School and Thoreau Demonstration Academy, respectively. Prizes were handed out to all of the finalists, including a VIP suite experience at an FC Tulsa’s USL Championship home opener for the teacher and her family and a bundle of FC Tulsa merch to wear to the match. However, one prize drew the biggest cheer.
Not only did the club have tickets for each teacher, but FC Tulsa also presented tickets for the teacher’s entire class of students to attend the club’s preseason match on April 17 at ONEOK Field.
“TCTA is so happy and grateful to partner with FC Tulsa and give our teachers gifts from us and from them as well,” said Shawna Mott-Wright, president of the TCTA. “We thank them for their partnership, everything they are doing for Tulsa and for elevating educators which they so much deserve.”
FC Tulsa will continue to work with the TCTA to find ways to give back to and support Tulsa’s teachers throughout the season.
