FT. LAUDERDALE – FC Tulsa’s Joaquín Rivas made history in south Florida on Wednesday night. By earning a start for the El Salvador National Team in its friendly against the United States, Rivas became the first active FC Tulsa player to make an international appearance in the club’s USL history.
Rivas played 50 minutes on the wing for “La Selecta” in what was his sixth appearance, third start, for his home country. He completed nine of his 12 passes on the evening, a 75% completion percentage and won one duel.
In what was a FIFA World Rankings mismatch, the difference was clear on the pitch as the 22nd-ranked United States scored five first half goals en route to a 6-0 victory over the 70th-ranked El Salvador.
With the resumption of 2022 World Cup qualifying in the spring, Rivas could next appear for El Salvador in late March if he is called back into the national team. “La Selecta” will play Grenada on March 25th before taking on Montserrat on March 28.
