Scouting Birmingham Legion FC
Birmingham’s Kaylor Hodges manned the sticks for the club’s opening matchup against Forward Madison FC, and despite rumors of a blistered hand perhaps holding him out of competition, Hodges went on a tear, obliterating Brandon Eaton from Forward Madison by a combined score of 25-1 and firmly establishing Birmingham as the frontrunner in Group 8.
Storylines to Watch
1) Can Tulsa topple Birmingham?
Tulsa’s win over Memphis was impressive, as the club’s newly formed esports cohort delivered on the hype in a 8-2, 10-0 victory to earn three points. Birmingham did much of the same, emerging as perhaps one of the two best teams in the entire tournament. Hodges simply played match one at a different speed than his opponent, blitzing past Eaton at every turn and never taking his foot off the gas. Can FC Tulsa pull off the upset on Tuesday?
2) Battle for the top
After both teams emerged victorious in their opening matches, they’re in excellent position to be the two teams to exit Group 8 and qualify for the knockout stage. A win on Tuesday would all but clinch a berth in the knockout stage, but Tulsa and Birmingham are the two favorites to move on.
3) Building Momentum
The first week of matches in the USL eCup separated the teams with Rocket League prowess from those without, but now Tulsa is faced with taking the next step. Tuesday’s match against Birmingham will be a tough challenge on the road to solidifying FC Tulsa’s spot among the USL eCup upper eschelon. Tulsa looks to build on the momentum of its first match to surprise a few people in match two.
