TULSA – FC Tulsa’s Rocket League debut could not have gone better as it bested Memphis 901 FC 2-0 in the first match in Group 8 of the USL eCup: Rocket League Edition. Tulsa won the two games 8-2 and then 10-0 to emphatically claim three points and grab a tie the top of the Group 8 standings.
In a late afternoon showdown on ESPN3 on Friday, Tulsa boosted and bounced around 901 FC’s Raul Gonzalez, cruising to victory. It was the Memphis midfielder, however, who got on the board first, lobbing one over the Tulsa vehicle and into the back of the net just 20 seconds into game 1. Tulsa made some touchline adjustments and never looked back, scoring seven goals on the trot en route to a convincing 8-2 victory.
With Tulsa taking the advantage into game 2, Memphis needed to attack and win to stay alive. Tulsa bided its time, ceding possession and defending for the first minute of the match. Tulsa waited patiently for its opening, and with 3:43 to go, Tulsa laid the ball off the wall and finished into the corner to take the lead in game 2. Similar to game 1, Tulsa scored and never wavered, scoring 10 goals and blanking Memphis to clinch the series and the three points.
The win is a strong start to group play for FC Tulsa, and the three points will prove critical as the contenders separate themselves from the pretenders in this new iteration of USL competition. Elsewhere in Group 8, Birmingham Legion FC beat Forward Madison FC to tie Tulsa atop the table and set up a critical matchup on Tuesday, when Birmingham and Tulsa will face off for the top spot in Group 8. That match will air Tuesday at 12 p.m. CT on ESPN3.
