TULSA – FC Tulsa is signing one of USL League One’s premier outside backs. The club announced on Monday that it had signed Vangjel Zguro, formerly of Chattanooga Red Wolves SC, for the 2020 USL Championship season, pending league and federation approval.
Zguro, 26, was a part of Chattanooga’s inaugural roster in 2019, the first season of USL League One. He finished the season tied for second in the league, and most among defenders, with seven assists and contributed a goal from his left back position. He frequently was on the ball for Chattanooga corner kicks, where his goal and majority of assists came from. The Albanian defender was named the USL League One “Player of the Week” in Week 27 and was named on the “Team of the Week” in both Weeks 10 and 27.
“Zguro is an attack minded fullback that has the capability to put the ball in the box from any angle,” said FC Tulsa head coach Michael Nsien. “Zguro has an excellent left foot, and he will keep the opposition busy. Last year in League One, he was one of the top fullbacks, and had a lot of experience in Europe before he came to the States. A quality left back is such a key player in the modern game.”
Last year, Zguro was voted the Midseason Defender of the Year. His most productive match offensively with Chattanooga came against Toronto FC on June 2 when Zguro notched assists on both Red Wolves goals in the 2-2 draw. His goal came straight from a corner kick, referred to colloquially as an “Olimpico,” in a 3-2 loss to Lansing Ignite on September 15.
“I’m very excited to join FC Tulsa,” said Zguro. “I will give my best for us to achieve great results. I can’t wait for preseason to meet with my teammates and coaching staff. I have seen the players FC Tulsa has signed in this window and they are all quality players. All we need to do is to adapt quickly, which I believe we can do.”
Prior to his 2019 campaign, Zguro played professionally in Albania from 2011 to 2018 with numerous Albanian Superliga and First Division clubs. While with FK Kukësi in 2018, Zguro’s final professional season in Albania, the defender made two appearances in UEFA Champions League Qualifying and one Europa League appearance.
Zguro is the fifth defender and 14th player overall signed to FC Tulsa’s 2020 roster.
