TAMPA – In an all FC Tulsa final, forward Tobenna Uzo’s goal against New Mexico United on October 12 was voted the 2019 USL Championship Goal of the Year by the league’s fans. Uzo received 61% of the over 3,000 votes to beat out teammate Rodrigo da Costa’s goal against Fresno FC from August 31.
It is the first time in FC Tulsa’s five years in the USL Championship that a player for the club has won the Goal of the Year award.
Both Uzo and da Costa's goals advanced through the 16-goal tournament where each round was decided by the fans. FC Tulsa was one of just two clubs to have two goals in the tournament, with each being an automatic qualifier due to monthly honors. Da Costa’s goal was awarded Goal of the Month for August while Uzo received the same honor in October.
Uzo’s goal against New Mexico was a capper to a strong end of the season push by the forward. In his last four appearances for Tulsa, Uzo scored three goals, contributing to two wins and a draw. In all, Uzo scored five goals in his last 11 appearances in 2019 and finished as the club’s fifth leading scorer.
Last week, Uzo was announced as a returning player to FC Tulsa’s 2020 roster.
