RECAP: Surez scores two as Austin Bold FC come back for 2-2 draw

AUSTIN – After two early goals from Darío Suárez, a goal on either side of halftime from Austin Bold FC meant that another 2-2 draw was on the cards for FC Tulsa in the Texas capital. In what statistically appeared to be a rather lopsided match, Austin Bold fired 35 shots towards the net of Sean Lewis, with 8 of them on target. Lewis was stellar once again, making six saves and keeping FC Tulsa in it from start to finish.
Darío Suárez netted the opener when in the 17’ he latched onto a chipped pass from Rodrigo da Costa and put it through the legs of Diego Restrepo to make it 1-0. Just 20 minutes later, Suárez would punish Restrepo again, capitalizing on a save that the Bold FC keeper spilled. Martínez had the shot that Restrepo stopped, but Suárez was right there to chip it over and in. Suárez now has five goals in his last three matches and seven on the season to go along with one assist.
FC Tulsa was keen to get into the half unscathed, as Bold FC mustered 10 shots already in the first period. In the 45’+3, Ish Jome took a shot that ricocheted off the arm of Bradley Bourgeois, and the referee signaled for a penalty. Sonny Guadarrama stepped up to take it, and Bold snatched one back before halftime.
Coming out of the break, Bold got off to a quick start, scoring in the 52’ through Fabien Garcia. The Frenchman pounced on a ball at the back post after Sean Lewis made a parried save from a header.
Once it was 2-2, Austin Bold turned up the pressure for the last 38 minutes. The hosts had 23 shots in the second half but managed to put only six on target. It would finish 2-2, and after all three matches between Bold FC and FC Tulsa, it’s three points apiece and three draws.
Here are three takeaways from tonight’s match.
1) Suárez is streaking – Darío Suárez is on some type of scoring streak. The Cuban forward has five goals in his last three matches, and seven in his last eight, which is tied for the best three-match stretch in the league this season.
2) Moloto Milestone – Midfielder Lebo Moloto made his 150th USL Championship appearance tonight, an achievement that only 33 players have made all-time. Teammate Cyprian Hedrick is one of those 33 as well, and the defender made his 167th appearance in Austin on Tuesday.
3) Down the home stretch – Four of the five clubs in Group D have five matches to go (RGV FC have just four), and FC Tulsa has four of them at home. It begins with a Black Gold Derby this Saturday, but the road to an FC Tulsa playoff berth goes through ONEOK Field.

Surez Named to Team of the Week, Second in Player of the Week Voting

TAMPA – Following a three-goal week, FC Tulsa forward Darío Suárez was named to the USL Championship Team of the Week for Week 11 and finished in a tie for second in Player of the Week voting. Fellow Cuban teammate, forward Ariel Martínez was also honored by inclusion on the Team of the Week Bench for notching two assists. Suárez’s Team of the Week nod is the first this year for an FC Tulsa player while it’s the second Bench honor of the campaign for Martínez.
Suárez was electric in two Tulsa matches last week, providing both goals in a 2-1 home win over Rio Grande Valley FC on Wednesday night. Then on Saturday, Suárez provided FC Tulsa’s lone goal in a key 1-1 road draw at Austin Bold FC. The three goals ran Suárez’s 2020 goal total to five on the season to lead all FC Tulsa goal scorers. It’s the first Team of the Week honor for Suárez in his USL Championship career.
FC Tulsa captain Ariel Martínez was also shown some love from the league’s voters as he made the Team of the Week Bench for the second time this season. Martínez chipped in two assists this week on Suárez goals as the Cuban connection helped FC Tulsa to four points earned in the two matches. Martínez leads FC Tulsa with three assists in 2020 while also contributing two goals himself.
Between Suárez and Martínez, the pair has either scored or assisted on each of FC Tulsa’s last nine goals dating back to the match-winner in the wee hours of August 2, a penalty scored by Martínez against Rio Grande Valley FC.
FC Tulsa returns to action tonight in a rematch at Austin Bold FC with kickoff at 8 p.m. CT. Tulsa’s next home match is Saturday against Black Gold Derby rival OKC Energy FC. Tickets to that match are available at www.fctulsa.com/tickets.

FC Tulsa looks to dig deep and earn crucial win at Austin on Tuesday

AUSTIN – In soccer, some matches are commonly referred to as a “six-pointer.” That is to say that a win for one club would not only earn it three points, but it would also “take” three points away from another club in similar position in the table.
But what is it called when teams have two six-pointers back-to-back? That’s the situation FC Tulsa and Austin Bold FC are in currently, with the second match of a double header set to kickoff tonight at 8 p.m. from Bold Stadium. Neither club took the “six points” from match one, but the trajectory for each team in the last five matches of the season comes down to what happens Tuesday night.
“Saturday was a pretty back-and-forth game,” midfielder Eric Bird said. “The intensity was high the entire time. You could feel that both teams have a lot on the line with this matchup. We are looking forward to getting back out there again on Tuesday.”
Saturday’s matchup was truly and end-to-end affair, as both teams were playing like it was the last 90 minutes of the season.
“We all have a bit of a bitter taste in our mouth,” goalkeeper Sean Lewis said. “We came here expecting a little more out of ourselves. We came here with the goal of winning both games. The draw isn’t the end of the world. We have another chance Tuesday to separate ourselves and go ahead of Austin. It’s one step at a time. We’re moving on. It might be a bit of a blessing having a game so close to [the last] one, because it kind of forces you to just pick your head up and focus on the next one.”
On Tuesday, Darío Suárez opened the scoring in the 30’ with a thunderbolt into the top left corner of the net, beating Diego Restrepo and earning his third goal of the week nomination of the season. A 75’ Roberto Avila equalizer would earn Austin a point, but Suárez’s strike was truly special.
“Darío is really coming into form right now,” Lewis said. “He’s finding a new gear; he’s finding another level. That is something we can look forward to taking advantage of out of Darío. He’s showing his quality and he’s making a difference for us up there.”
The goal was Suárez’s third in two matches and fifth on the season. Adding in his assist versus Austin Bold at home, the Cuban has contributed to half of FC Tulsa’s goals in 2020.
“I can’t say enough good things about Darío over the past two games.” Bird added. “He’s not only been the difference by scoring goals but he’s also been putting in more work to help out defensively. He’s a key player for us and he’s proving it on the field.”
Tuesday’s match will be a test of everyone’s mettle, as well as their fitness. The short rest and already congested schedule means that both squads will have to dig deep and find an extra gear.
“We think over the two legs that we have more depth than them,” Head Coach Michael Nsien said. “You could see it in the second half with the subs we brought on who could change the game. I think if we got four points out of this trip, we would say that was successful and we would be happy with it.”
The match kicks off tonight at 8 p.m., and fans in Tulsa can watch the match on My41 Tulsa. It will also be streamed on ESPN+ anywhere in the United States as well as YouTube for international viewers. Fans in Tulsa can also catch the match at either the Elgin Park watch party or the Tulsan Bar watch party.

Match Preview: FC Tulsa at Austin Bold FC

AUSTIN – After two clashes between FC Tulsa and Austin Bold FC, the two teams have been tough to separate. In each of the previous two matchups, FC Tulsa have taken the lead three times, and on all three occasions Bold FC have found an equalizer.
Now, in the third and final showdown in this 2020 season, both teams will be desperate for a winner. Three points would put FC Tulsa in the driver’s seat with five matches to play, but a loss would mean Austin Bold would need to lose a match down the stretch for FC Tulsa to gain ground.

RECAP: Surez scores again as FC Tulsa tie Austin Bold FC 1-1

TULSA – After the first of two consecutive matches between Austin Bold FC and FC Tulsa, there was nothing to separate the two sides. A Darío Suárez belter from outside of the box put Tulsa ahead in the 30’, but a 74’ equalizer from Roberto Avila means that the two sides remain level on the season, and the standings in Group D remain the same.
Suárez got the goalscoring going with an incredible strike that found the top left corner. Ariel Martínez chased down a ball in the corner, and after laying it off for his Cuban strike partner, Suárez curled it near post past Diego Restrepo despite the Bold keeper getting his paws on it.
The match would go into the half at 1-0, thanks in part to the heroics of Sean Lewis. FC Tulsa’s man in net had three saves at the half and made five total in the match.
Bold FC peppered the net in the early second half, and its equalizer finally came when Josue Soto crossed in a ball that fell to Avila, who finished past Lewis. FC Tulsa rebounded quickly, though, making a quadruple sub in the 82’ that livened up the match.
As stoppage time arrived, FC Tulsa put the pressure on Austin with some dangerous chances, including the last play of the match. Cristhian Altamirano whipped in a cross which Suárez got a head on, but Restrepo made an excellent save at close range for his only save of the match.
Here are three takeaways from the first of a crucial doubleheader.
1) Suárez on fire – Darío Suárez scored his third goal in two matches with his strike on Saturday. His five goals and an assist in the last seven matches means he has contributed to half of FC Tulsa’s goals this season.
2) Sean stellar between the sticks – A vintage Sean Lewis match on Saturday night saw the keeper make five incredible saves. His 32 saves this season are top 7 in the league, and he has one of the best save percentages of goalkeepers who have faced more than 30 shots.
3) All on the line on Tuesday – After two of the clubs’ three showdowns in 2020, FC Tulsa and Austin Bold are all square. The final matchup on Tuesday has massive implications for the playoffs, as a win on Tuesday would put FC Tulsa three points ahead of Bold in the table with five matches to play.
