TAMPA – Following a three-goal week, FC Tulsa forward Darío Suárez was named to the USL Championship Team of the Week for Week 11 and finished in a tie for second in Player of the Week voting. Fellow Cuban teammate, forward Ariel Martínez was also honored by inclusion on the Team of the Week Bench for notching two assists. Suárez’s Team of the Week nod is the first this year for an FC Tulsa player while it’s the second Bench honor of the campaign for Martínez.
Suárez was electric in two Tulsa matches last week, providing both goals in a 2-1 home win over Rio Grande Valley FC on Wednesday night. Then on Saturday, Suárez provided FC Tulsa’s lone goal in a key 1-1 road draw at Austin Bold FC. The three goals ran Suárez’s 2020 goal total to five on the season to lead all FC Tulsa goal scorers. It’s the first Team of the Week honor for Suárez in his USL Championship career.
FC Tulsa captain Ariel Martínez was also shown some love from the league’s voters as he made the Team of the Week Bench for the second time this season. Martínez chipped in two assists this week on Suárez goals as the Cuban connection helped FC Tulsa to four points earned in the two matches. Martínez leads FC Tulsa with three assists in 2020 while also contributing two goals himself.
Between Suárez and Martínez, the pair has either scored or assisted on each of FC Tulsa’s last nine goals dating back to the match-winner in the wee hours of August 2, a penalty scored by Martínez against Rio Grande Valley FC.
FC Tulsa returns to action tonight in a rematch at Austin Bold FC with kickoff at 8 p.m. CT. Tulsa’s next home match is Saturday against Black Gold Derby rival OKC Energy FC. Tickets to that match are available at www.fctulsa.com/tickets.
