A late goal from Delentz Pierre was not enough for FC Tulsa to overcome an early deficit on Saturday night as they fell to Phoenix Rising FC 2-1 on the road.
The hosts capitalized early on a header off a whipped in cross to take the lead in the sixth minute and place the Scissortails in an early hole. The Tulsa attack threatened a time or two in the first half but could not break through in the frame.
The Scissortails continued to push for an equalizer, controlling 70 percent of the possession in the second half, but were unable to score before Phoenix tacked on another in the 88th minute. Pierre’s late header off a feed from Wilson Eisner gave Tulsa some late life, but the visitors left Arizona without any points in hand.
KEY STORYLINES
FC Tulsa announced earlier this week that it signed defender and club captain Abdoulaye Cissoko to a contract extension. Since arriving in Oklahoma before the 2025 season, Cissoko has been a mainstay on the back line for the Scissortails helping the club to its first ever Western Conference championship and USL Championship Final appearance. The 26-year-old has been a part of 19 clean sheets as a Scissortail, leading the club in blocked shots (33) in his Tulsa tenure while ranking second in clearances (206) and interceptions (46).
The club also recently announced long-term extensions for General Manager and Sporting Director Caleb Sewell and Head Coach Luke Spencer. Both have radically transformed the club’s on-field product in just under two seasons at the helm and immediately led the Scissortails to their best season in club history in 2025, culminating in a Western Conference championship last season and hosting the USL Championship Final, both firsts for the club. These moves reflect the club’s intentions to be among the league’s best in its on and off-field endeavors as the next chapter for FC Tulsa begins.
The Western Conference has been a bloodbath in 2026 with the gap between third place and tenth a mere five points. FC Tulsa are currently in a four-way tie for fourth place, ahead of San Antonio and Sacramento but behind Orange County. As the club continues to get players back from injury, the Scissortails are in prime position to make a late charge with matches left against three of the four clubs ahead of them.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Defender Abdoulaye Cissoko: After recovering from an early season injury in 2026, Cissoko has started the last ten matches for the Scissortails with the back line allowing just five goals in that span while keeping six clean sheets. He currently leads the side in blocked shots (12) and aerial duels won (44).
Defender Joel Sangwa: Traditionally a center back, Sangwa has been tasked with filling in for the Scissortails in the wingback role with Owen Damm and Harvey St Clair both recovering from injuries. This has not fazed the 27-year-old, however, as he has flourished on the outside and become more involved in the Tulsa attack the last few weeks, proving to be a versatile weapon for head coach Luke Spencer to deploy.
Midfielder Boubacar Diallo: The Senegalese midfielder had missed all of 2026 with a lower body injury but made his return to the pitch last Saturday as a second half substitute. Diallo provides a steady presence for the Scissortails as a true defensive midfielder and should provide a boost to the club’s playoff aspirations.
OPPONENT INFO: BROOKLYN FC
This is the first ever meeting between Tulsa and Brooklyn and is the Scissortails’ first ever trip to the Empire State. Tulsa are 3-2-0 against the Eastern Conference this season with one win on the road against Pittsburgh back on July 29.
Marlon LeBlanc’s side has struggled to find the back of the net in 2026 with the fewest goals scored in USL Championship (23) along with the second lowest goal differential (-20). Brooklyn have won just one of its last ten matches across all competitions with that win coming against Sporting Club Jacksonville, the other expansion side this season below them in the Eastern Conference standings.
Markus Anderson (6 goals, 4 assists) led the Brooklyn attack before being recalled on loan by the Philadelphia Union while former Tulsa man Stefan Stojanovic (4 goals) looks to step up in his place. Vuk Latinovich ranks fourth in the league in clearances (138) while Chris Olney Jr. and Juan Carlos Obregón Jr also hope to contribute on Saturday night.
