TULSA – With only one win through 11 matches in 2023, the FC Tulsa front office and coaching staff have been in search of an impetus to kickstart its offense and spark a run up the crowded Eastern Conference table. After pulling off what many deem as the biggest deal in USL Championship history, Tulsa is hopeful that forward Phillip Goodrum will be the man to provide that spark.
On Monday, FC Tulsa acquired Goodrum via transfer from Memphis 901 FC, one of the most productive forwards the USL Championship has to offer. He received All-League First Team honors last season after scoring 22 goals and logging seven assists between regular season and postseason play, finishing just one goal short of Milan Iloski for the Golden Boot.
Goodrum, when combined up front with Marcus Epps, Milo Yosef, Darío Suárez, and Moses Dyer, has the potential to make Tulsa’s attacking corps one of the most lethal in the league. Epps continues to create opportunities for his teammates as well as score himself (3 goals, 2 assists) and Darío Suárez has now scored in two of his last three matches.
On Wednesday night, the newly-configured forward unit is off to Lynn Family Stadium to take on Louisville City FC. In six previous matchups with LouCity, Tulsa has posted a 2W-3L-1D record with its last win in Kentucky taking place on September 3, 2021.
Despite its current standing in the table, FC Tulsa is only two points out of a Playoffs spot. Should the club string multiple wins together, FC Tulsa is right back in the mix for a home match in the opening round amidst a Conference separated by only 13 points from top to bottom.
Kickoff from Louisville is set for 6:30 p.m. CT.
SCOUTING LOUISVILLE CITY
Louisville City FC comes into Wednesday night’s matchup unbeaten in its last five USL Championship matches. The club’s streaking form has catapulted it into third place in the Eastern Conference, sitting on 17 points in tandem with Tampa Bay Rowdies and Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC. Through nine matches, Louisville has mustered only 10 goals, three of which came last weekend vs. Miami FC, the third-fewest total in the USL Championship. Sean Totsch has seemingly found his scoring form as of late, bagging goals in back-to-back matches for the defending Eastern Conference champs.
Its defense, however, has been terrific, surrendering only nine goals to go alongside four clean sheets.
STAT OF THE MATCH
Marcus Epps is the USL Championship’s most accurate crosser through 11 weeks of action, posting a 42% crossing accuracy rate. Epps leads the club in goals (3), tied for the lead in assists (2), and has created 11 scoring chances to boot.
