Wormell’s Seven-Save Shutout Earns the Goalkeeper the USL Championship’s Highest Weekly Honor
TULSA – Following a dazzling performance in FC Tulsa’s shutout victory over Indy Eleven this past Saturday, FC Tulsa keeper Austin Wormell has not only been named to the USL Championship’s Week 24 Team of the Week, but the man between the posts has also received the league’s highest weekly honor – Wormell has been named the USL Championship’s Player of the Week.
The Tulsa native and Bishop Kelley grad made seven saves on Saturday, including multiple key second-half smothers to secure the three points for Tulsa in its narrow 1-0 win. Wormell kept his sheet clean for the fourth time this season in 13 outings for FC Tulsa as the club’s playoff chances have been on the rise with wins in three of its last four matches.
“This is a huge process for him, and I think he is standing firm,” said FC Tulsa interim Head Coach Donovan Ricketts. “I cannot give him enough credit, for being a kid his age and his lack of experience, to be playing like he’s been playing.”
Wormell increased his season save total to 54 stops on Saturday and now boasts an 80.6% save pct. in 2022, the highest mark of any goalkeeper in the USL Championship this season. With a win, Wormell now owns a 3W-1L-2D record at ONEOK Field during the current campaign. His Team of the Week award is his third such honor this season while his Player of the Week accolade is the first of Wormell’s career.
“It’s just good to be out there and play with the guys,” said Wormell when asked about his brilliant performances as of late. “Everyone is putting in a good shift, everyone is locked in, and I just feed off everyone’s energy.”
Wormell is back in action for FC Tulsa tomorrow night as Hartford Athletic makes the trip down to ONEOK Field. Tulsa is looking to make it three wins on the bounce as the gap between it and a playoff spot continues to shrink. The match kicks off at 7:30 p.m. CT.
