TULSA – Rodrigo da Costa has 20/20 vision.
If there was even a doubt, he erased it on Wednesday night with his 20th career USL Championship assist. The helper officially put the Brazilian midfielder in rare air as he joined the league’s 20+ goal, 20+ assist club, only the 27th player to hit the career mark in USL’s history.
What’s even more astounding is that his 24 goals and 20 assists have come in just 78 career matches, meaning he is averaging more than 1 goal or assist in every other match he plays in. That’s easily the most for Tulsa player with at least a full season with the franchise.
Of course, sometimes da Costa can just get hot. Earlier this season, he scored seven goals and added two assists over an eight-match stretch from June 16-July 28. He’s now heating up again with three goals and an assist in his last three matches. It’s times like these that he earns the nickname Rodri-Goal.
In addition to being the newest member of the 20/20 club, da Costa also owns a bit of FC Tulsa history now as well. The 27-year-old is now the franchise’s all-time goalscoring and assisting leader. His current three-match streak of goals has leapfrogged his teammate, Joaquín Rivas, for dibs on the top spot.
If you are putting up a Mt. Rushmore of all-time Tulsa USL Championship players, da Costa’s bearded face would have to be the first etched into the stone.
