TAMPA – A dominant two-win week has FC Tulsa back in the USL Championship Team of the Week. Four FC Tulsa players were named in the league’s Team of the Week following Week 19 – defender Matt Sheldon, midfielder Lebo Moloto and forward Marlon Santos to the XI and defender Jorge Corrales to the bench – setting a franchise record for most players on a single Team of the Week.
Following a goal in FC Tulsa’s 3-1 win over Atlanta United 2, the second of his career, Sheldon secured his first career Team of the Week. He was also stout defensively over two FC Tulsa victories, winning 16 of 24 duels with two interceptions, 19 recoveries and a chance created. Despite a busy week including three matches in seven days, Sheldon showed his fitness, playing all 90 minutes against both Memphis 901 FC and Atlanta United 2.
Moloto got onto the scoresheet in a big way against Atlanta, scoring twice in the first half to give FC Tulsa a two-goal lead it would not relinquish. The brace marked the South African’s first two goals of the 2021 season to go along with two assists earned earlier in August. It’s the first time Moloto has made a Team of the Week in his two seasons with FC Tulsa, and marks the fourth different team he has made a USL Championship Team of the Week for – Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC (2016), Sporting KC II (2017), Nashville SC (2019) and now FC Tulsa.
Marlon scored a brace himself, both goals in a thrilling 2-1 stoppage time victory over Memphis 901 FC and earned a Team of the Week spot for the first time in 2021. It’s not Marlon’s first time honored with a weekly award by the USL Championship as the agile winger was named in back-to-back Team of the Weeks soon after signing with the club late in the 2019 season.
While Corrales didn’t make the full Team of the Week, his performances last week were honored with an honorable mention on the Team of the Week bench. Corrales had an assist in Tulsa’s win over Memphis and played strong defense as a part of a unit which allowed just two goals over the 180 minutes of soccer.
FC Tulsa will return to action on Friday night on the road at Louisville City FC’s Lynn Family Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. and the match will air locally on MY41 Tulsa and nationally on ESPN+.
