Louisville, KY. – A tough 2-1 defeat for FC Tulsa on the road at the hands of LouCity means the pressure is back on for the black and gold to keep pace in the Central Division.
After two goals from Louisville, Bradley Bourgeois responded with a goal of his own in the 90'+2 minute, his first of the season, bringing FC Tulsa within just one of LouCity with four minutes remaining in stoppage time. Lebo Moloto sent in a beautiful ball from the right side on a free kick, earning his first assist of 2021 on the play. But the two goals from Louisville proved to be enough by the final whistle.
FC Tulsa had several other chances to equalize or take the lead in the match, but the ruler betrayed Tulsa once again as two shots missed by mere inches. Rodrigo da Costa had a shot lined up for the bottom left corner that was just wide of the post. Then Mo Jadama, in his 100th career USL Championship appearance, rifled a ball into the crossbar in the second half on a free kick.
Cameron Lancaster continues to be a kryptonite for FC Tulsa. The Englishman netted both goals for Louisville City, his brace tonight bringing his total to 11 on the season and five against Tulsa in three matches. One goal came off a deflection, the other was collected and slotted in following a moment of mayhem where the ball bounced around from foot to foot.
After losing five of its last six matches, FC Tulsa has finally seen its third-place spot in the standings usurped. Despite plenty of time remaining in the season, FC Tulsa will face a pivotal part of the schedule with its next six matches coming against division opponents.
Below are three takeaways from tonight’s match.
1) BRADLEY HEADS IN FIRST TULSA TALLY
Bradley Bourgeois’ goal in the 90'+2 minute was not only memorable because it gave FC Tulsa an opportunity for more late-match heroics, but it also marks the first time Bourgeois netted a goal in a FC Tulsa shirt.
It was Bourgeois’ fifth career goal over the span of his 101 matches played in USL Championship. His first goal came back in 2016 with Rio Grande Valley FC Toros, the other three coming with Nashville SC in 2018 and 2019.
2) MOLOTO GETS FIRST ASSIST OF THE SEASON
Midfielder Lebo Moloto has made a career out of setting up his teammates with great looks in front of goal, but he had yet to connect with a teammate in 2021 for a goal until tonight. Moloto’s beautiful delivery off a free kick in stoppage time to long-time teammate Bradley Bourgeois marked his first assist of the season, his fourth with FC Tulsa, and his 32nd career assist.
3) SEAN LEWIS KEEPS IT CLOSE
The FC Tulsa keeper, Sean Lewis, continues to get back into his 2020 form with another strong outing, earning three saves forcing him to leave his feet and keeping his club in the match throughout the full 90+ minutes. The two goals conceded by Lewis were difficult to pin on the keeper, one being deflected off a defender and the other bouncing around a crowd of feet for what felt like an eternity.
Lewis now has nine saves in his last three matches since re-entering the Starting 11 for FC Tulsa.
UP NEXT
FC Tulsa will conclude its two-match road trip next Sunday afternoon on August 22 in Birmingham. In its previous matchup just last weekend, FC Tulsa banged home two late goals in the 88' minute and 90'+1 minute to give Tulsa the win over its second-place rivals. FC Tulsa will feel much more comfortable in the heat of the division race coming away with points against a tough Birmingham Legion FC squad.
Kickoff from BBVA Stadium on August 22 is slated for 4:00 p.m. CT.
