TULSA- This one was truly a game of inches.
Misfortune continues to follow FC Tulsa as the club rattled two off the post and gave up two late goals in a 2-0 loss to Indy Eleven at ONEOK Field on Wednesday night.
FC Tulsa led the attack from the beginning of the night, earning the better of the opportunities from the starting whistle to the final 10 minutes. Dario Suarez and Marlon Santos both caused havoc for Indy on the flanks throughout the match as each winger hit woodwork in the second half after beating their defenders 1-on-1, something both did successfully on several occasions.
Although FC Tulsa was out on the front foot and saw more scoring chances than the opposition, Indy took advantage of its limited looks and managed to bag two goals on the end of long balls downfield, both following the 79’ minute.
Every statistical category was dominated by FC Tulsa, both offensively and defensively, but the scoreboard betrayed Tulsa once again.
Following four straight losses, FC Tulsa’s next match on Saturday at ONEOK Field becomes even more crucial as the Central Division's second place club, Birmingham Legion FC, comes to town. Three clubs are now tied for third place in the Central Division, FC Tulsa and Indy Eleven being two of them.
Below are three takeaways from tonight’s match.
1) IMPROVED ATTACK
Despite coming away without points, the FC Tulsa attack looked more dangerous than it has in its three previous losses. FC Tulsa rattled off 19 shots as opposed to Indy’s 10 shots, marking the first match in its last nine that the club outshot its opponent (despite winning three matches during that nine-match stretch). Tulsa also led in total passes, possession, and chances created.
2) JASON JOHNSON MAKES FIRST APPEARANCE
The newest addition to FC Tulsa, Jason Johnson, made an instant impact in his first appearance for the club. Johnson was subbed on in the 59’ and registered two shots. He earned himself one of the best looks of the night on a cross from Marlon Santos in the second half but could not quite connect as he found pockets of space all night. His play with teammates was fluid and impressive after just two days of practice with his new club.
3) MARLON KEEPS PRODUCING
Marlon Santos continued his excellent run of form tonight. Santos tallied two total shots, one of which hit the near post, and created three chances for his teammates. It was either an aerial barrage of crosses from his side of the pitch all night, or Santos took it on himself to beat his mark with skilled footwork and speed.
