DALLAS – FC Tulsa is shining on the international stage. Tulsa forward Joaquín Rivas, who sits second on the team and top-10 in the USL Championship in goals this season, has taken his red-hot form to the CONCACAF Gold Cup with the Salvadoran National Team.
Rivas, who had made 10 career appearances for El Salvador heading into last night’s match, made his Gold Cup debut as a substitute in the 80’. He entered into a 0-0 match, with El Salvador knocking on the door but unable to find the opening goal.
Enter FC Tulsa’s man, who immediately brought a jolt of energy into the match. Less than 90 seconds after he made his entrance, he made a run across the box, pulling defenders away and creating the space for Seattle Sounders FC’s Alex Roldan to fire a shot into the back of the net.
Up 1-0 and looking to seal the deal, El Salvador pushed to get a second and put the match to bed. In the sixth minute of stoppage time, Rivas would do just that. He received a centered ball from fellow USL Championship player Walmer Martinez of Hartford Athletic and blasted it past the keeper emphatically to close the match for his country and get his first Gold Cup goal.
Rivas and El Salvador now lead Group A in the CONCACAF Gold Cup, earning three points while Mexico and Trinidad and Tobago sit back with one. Next up for El Salvador is a matchup with Trinidad and Tobago on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. CT, followed by a critical match against Mexico on Sunday night at 9 p.m. CT.
