TULSA – FC Tulsa forward Joaquín Rivas and defender Jorge Corrales will again represent their countries on the international stage this summer. Rivas has been called in by El Salvador and Corrales by Cuba for the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup which will run throughout the month of July. Both players have previously received call ups for their respective countries earlier in 2021 for FIFA World Cup qualifying.
Corrales will head to Cuba’s camp first as the “Leones del Caribe” must advance past two single match Gold Cup preliminary rounds to enter the Group Stage. Cuba will play French Guiana on Saturday, July 3 at 6 p.m. in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. for its First Round match. If Cuba wins, it will play the winner of Trinidad & Tobago and Montserrat on Tuesday, July 6, in the Second Round. Another victory would see Cuba advance to Group A in the Group stage.
Since Cuba lifted the ban on foreign-based players competing for its national team, Corrales has played all 90 minutes in four World Cup qualifying matches. In a 5-0 win over British Virgin Islands on June 2, Corrales recorded an assist, his first ever for his country.
Based on their finish in the CONCACAF Nations League B, Rivas and El Salvador will start their Gold Cup run in Group stage as La Selecta has been drawn in Group A alongside Mexico, Curaçao and the winner of premilinary rounds. El Salvador will play three group matches starting on July 10 against Curaçao in Frisco, Texas.
Since signing with FC Tulsa, Rivas has earned five caps for El Salvador, including four in FIFA World Cup qualifiers. In those five matches, all starts, Rivas has contributed two assists with El Salvador has gone 3-1-1.
If either Cuba or El Salvador advance to the Knockout stage by finishing in the first or second spots of Group A, those matches will begin on July 24 and 25 in either Glendale, Arizona or AT&T Stadium in Arlington.
