TAMPA – Some questions about the FC Tulsa’s 2021 USL Championship season and format were answered following a Board of Governors meeting on Thursday afternoon. The biggest news is that the 2021 season will begin around May 1, a later start date than the usual March start.
The 31 clubs in the USL Championship will be broken up into four divisions by geography and the schedule will consist of 32 matches for each team across a 27-week season, ending in late October. Following the conclusion of the regular season, the USL Championship Playoffs will be played in November.
While the regular season will begin around May 1, the Board of Governors voted for a flexible start date, meaning teams have the option to begin the season anywhere between April 24 and May 15.
“Knowing these details are finalized makes the 2021 season seem that much closer to starting,” said FC Tulsa president James Cannon. “We couldn't be more ready to get back in front of the home fans at ONEOK Field, and we are pushing to start our season as early as possible within the season kickoff window. As fans have seen with our recent player announcements, our sights are focused on bringing silverware to Tulsa in 2021.”
More information about FC Tulsa’s 2021 schedule, division alignment and the USL Championship Playoff structure will be released in the coming weeks as the league monitors the COVID-19 crisis in the event that any alterations to the format need to be made.
