TULSA – We already knew this, you already knew this, but today is our day to get hype about this. Bradley Bourgeois joins the 2021 FC Tulsa roster on the second year of his multi-year deal.
“I’m coming back to a place I feel is home,” Bourgeois said. “I love this city, this organization and of course our amazing fans.”
Bourgeois was one of three FC Tulsa players to play every minute of every match in 2020, including all 120 minutes of FC Tulsa’s playoff match in El Paso. The defender traditionally plays in the center, but 2020 saw him move to full back as well as center back.
Regardless of where in the defense he was located, Bourgeois was a defensive stalwart for the club, a season performance which earned him the 2020 FC Tulsa Defender of the Year award. Bourgeois was a key piece in turning FC Tulsa’s defense from the leakiest unit in the USL Championship to one of the stingiest squads in 2020.
“Just because it was done for one season is not good enough,” Bourgeois said. “Our goal in 2021 is to vastly improve our defense once again. There were a lot of mistakes that we felt could have be avoided and with the additions made this offseason, our goal is to be the best in league.”
Bourgeois returned to Tulsa ahead of the 2020 season after a two-year stint in Nashville with Nashville SC. Before that, Bourgeois was a member of the 2017 Tulsa Roughnecks squad which made the playoffs, and before that he played four years at the University of Tulsa. The connection he has developed with the city and the fans is something truly special to him.
“Man, oh man, I love those fans at ONEOK,” Bourgeois exclaimed. “I think they were able to see the improvement last year, and they were such a big part of what we were doing. All I can say is I hope to be able to hit that drum after every home game next year, because that means it’s 3 points.”
Bourgeois worked with FC Tulsa Head Coach Michael Nsien during his stint in Tulsa in 2017, and the head coach’s appointment in 2019 turned his head. Bourgeois’ relationship with the coach was a major factor in his return to Tulsa last season.
“He is one of the main reasons I came back in 2020,” Bourgeois said. “His vision, leadership, work ethic and the way he sees the game allow for me to learn and grow every day. What he is trying to build has already shown, with the massive strides we took last year. We can only work to continue that.“
Bourgeois has never missed the playoffs in his USL Championship career since he made his debut in 2016. He is the only player in Tulsa’s USL history to have appeared in every playoff match, and he also ranks 6th in club history in minutes played and 8th in appearances.
“We are just getting started in Tulsa, I said this last year about putting Tulsa back on the map… we are coming, just wait.”
Bourgeois is one of four players who are returning to FC Tulsa for the second year of a multi-year deal. Lebo Moloto, Rodrigo da Costa, and Marlon will also be back in Tulsa for 2021.
