TULSA – One of the best goalscorers in FC Tulsa history is coming back to Tulsa. Winger Joaquín Rivas, who scored 17 goals over the 2017 and 2018 seasons with the club, has signed with FC Tulsa for the 2021 USL Championship season, pending league and federation approval.
After beginning his career with Sacramento Republic FC, Rivas debuted for Tulsa in 2017 and scored five goals while adding five assists as the then-Roughnecks made their first USL Championship Playoff appearance that season. Rivas’ second year with Tulsa was even better as the winger scored a single season club record 12 goals in 2018. His 17 total goals with Tulsa are the second-most in club history, three behind leader Sammy Ochoa.
“Joaquín is a player that Tulsa supporters will be very familiar with and excited to see back in our team,” said FC Tulsa head coach Michael Nsien. “Joaquín had great years here in Tulsa, and his style of play from the wing and his ability to combine inside fits our style of play perfectly. He can create his own opportunities and also set up chances for teammates. That goal and assist capability he possesses is what we want from that position.”
The El Salvadorian has made five international appearances for “La Selecta” and has scored one goal while with country, a match winner in a friendly against Haiti in 2018. He last appeared in March of 2019 helping El Salvador to a historic 2-0 upset victory over Peru. There is a strong likelihood that Rivas will be called into the team for El Salvador’s friendly against the U.S. Men’s National Team on December 9 in Miami.
“Seeing how much the club has evolved made me want to be a part of the organization,” said Rivas. “Tulsa has given me many opportunities and success in my career. I am extremely excited to return to the place I’ve always had at heart.”
Rivas, 28, comes back to FC Tulsa on the heels of two seasons with Saint Louis FC. Rivas missed most of the 2019 campaign following a knee injury, making only six appearances, but still managed to bag one goal with two assists. He came back strong in 2020 to help Saint Louis make the USL Championship Playoffs with one goal and one assist in the regular season. In Saint Louis FC’s playoff victory over Hartford Athletic this past October, Rivas scored the game-clinching goal to send Saint Louis to the USL Championship Quarterfinals.
The forward is the second player announced to the 2021 FC Tulsa roster joining keeper Sean Lewis. FC Tulsa will continue to announce players to the roster over the coming weeks and months prior to the start of the season.
