TULSA – Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines. FC Tulsa is getting ready to take a different kind of pitch to compete against USL Championship and USL League One opposition. On Wednesday, The USL announced the first iteration of the USL eCup: Rocket League Edition.
The video game, released in 2015, is similar to soccer, except instead of players running around, rocket-powered cars compete to put the ball in the goal. The game was named Best Sports Game at E3 in 2015, and has built a large esports infrastructure since its release.
32 clubs will matchup in a one-on-one game mode with representatives from each team consisting of a team captain and two alternates for the duration of the tournament. The draw will be done World Cup style, with the teams being divvied up into eight groups of four teams to be revealed later today. The Group Stage will run from Tuesday, March 31 and Friday, April 10.
The group stage matches will be a best-of-three showdown between two players. Each team will play once during Week 1 of the tournament, and then twice in Week 2. The winner will receive three points for a win in a group stage match, while the loser will earn zero. There are no draws at any stage of the competition.
The top two teams from each group will advance to the knockout stage of the tournament, which takes place between Monday, April 13 and Saturday, April 25. Knockout stage matches will be staged in a best-of-five series through the Round of 16, Quarterfinals and Semifinals, with the Final to be a best-of-seven series to crown the winner of the tournament’s inaugural edition on the final day.
In addition to the action on the virtual pitch, each club will be playing for a local charity. FC Tulsa will represent the Tulsa Area United Way and a link to the donation page will be available for fans to chip in and support throughout the Twitch streams and on the club’s website.
