The first half of the match started off quietly. There was not a shot on goal from either team through the first 40 minutes of the game.
The first real chance of the night came for the Roughnecks came at the end of the half when Eti Tavares was fouled just outside the box. Nemanja Vukovic took the free kick and bent the ball to the lower right corner, but Toros keeper Michael Nelson got a hand on the ball and denied the goal.
Just minutes into the second half, RGV earned a corner kick and scored the game’s first goal. In the 51st minute, Todd Wharton sent in the corner to the near post. The ball skipped off the head of Nicolas Perea and found the back of the net, giving RGV the lead.
Just two minutes later, the Toros doubled the margin. From midfield, Jesus Enriquez sent a ball to the left side of the box. Fabian Cerda made an ill-advised attempt to come out for the ball, but Carlos Small beat him to it and dribbled around the keeper to set up an easy finished that made it a 2-0 lead.

In the 60th minute, Rivas cut the Roughnecks deficit in half and made history. Just outside the box, Tavares delivered a nice pass to Michael Gamble who immediately sent a cross to the right. Rivas was unmarked at the back post and tapped in the cross for Tulsa’s first goal of the night.
The goal was Rivas’ 12th of the season, setting a new franchise record for the Roughnecks. The goal mark was previously shared by Ian Svantesson and Sammy Ochoa.
The final minutes saw the Roughnecks controlling possession in search of an equalizer. The Roughnecks came very close to coming up with the second goal in stoppage time. Tavares sent in a cross to Adrian Jusino in the center of the box who struck a low shot that forced Nelson to dive and come up with a nice save that preserved the lead.
The attempt would prove to be the last of the game, as the Roughnecks fell to the Toros 2-1.
