The Tulsa Roughnecks FC opened its 2018 preseason schedule Sunday afternoon with a 2-1 victory over the University of Tulsa at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium. The Roughnecks got first-half goals from Adrian Jusino and Michael Gamble to post the victory.
The Roughnecks used the match to get just over a half hour of time on the field for a number of contracted players, while trialists saw a majority of the remaining minutes.
The temperature at kickoff was 33 degrees, the coldest ever for a Roughnecks match.
Despite the chill, it took TRFC just nine minutes to open the scoring. After the Golden Hurricane was whistled for a foul about eight yards from the left corner of the penalty area, Eti Tavares swerved in a free kick that found an unmarked Jusino at the back post. The defender slammed a shot into the upper portion of the net to put the Roughnecks in front 1-0.
A mistake by the Roughnecks in the back allowed the University of Tulsa to level the score just ten minutes later. After a giveaway, TRFC goalkeeper Chase Gentry had no chance as Golden Hurricane freshman Chase Bromstedt found the back of the net to tie the score at 1-1.
Gentry made the save of the match in the 29th minute when he stretched to tip a free kick effort from Miguel Velasquez off the crossbar. The Golden Hurricane fired the rebound high over the crossbar to keep it at 1-1.

The Roughnecks went back in front just two minutes before the halftime whistle. A long ball over the top found Michael Gamble who cut inside a defender and rolled his shot into the far corner of the net. The goal from the former New England Revolution draftee put TRFC in front to stay, 2-1.
The second half featured a number of trialists for the Roughnecks. Both teams forced saves from the goalkeepers, but neither side could find the back of the net.
The match marked the fourth straight season the two Tulsa sides have met in the preseason.
The Roughnecks will continue their preseason next Saturday when they travel to Kansas City to face the Swope Park Rangers at 2:00 p.m. CST.
