FENTON, Mo. – And the STILL undefeated FC Tulsa….

No, it’s not just a Michael Buffer quote. Two goals, three points, one win on Saturday night at Saint Louis leaves FC Tulsa as one of just four unbeaten teams left in the USL Championship and securely in playoff position in Group D.

An opening 25-yard screamer from Eric Bird paired with a silencer from Dario Suarez in stoppage time were all FC Tulsa needed to snag the first win in the Gateway City in franchise history, 2-0. It was just Saint Louis FC’s fourth loss at home in its last 21 matches.

In what was a prize fight between two clubs in playoff position in their respective groups, FC Tulsa came out of the gate with the momentum, and it ultimately culminated in a wonder strike from the midfielder Bird just before halftime. Tulsa went into the locker room up 1-0 from Bird’s banger.

The second half was nearly the opposite of the first as Saint Louis poured on the attack and FC Tulsa dug its heels into the ground. The defense held long enough for super sub Darío Suárez to double the lead in stoppage time.

On his 28th birthday, Suárez found the net just five minutes after hitting the post to seal the deal and keep FC Tulsa unbeaten.

Here are three takeaways from the 2-0 victory.

1) Tulsa Firsts for Bird, Suárez

With the goals, both Bird and Suárez found the scoresheet for the first time in their short FC Tulsa careers. For Bird, it’s the 14th USL Championship goal of his six-year career and first since September 22, 2019. Head Coach Michael Nsien revealed after the match that he targeted eight points out of the team’s first five matches in 2020, all on the road, before the home opener on Wednesday, August 12. The five-match roadtrip turned into a four-matcher after a postponement against Austin Bold FC a few weeks ago. With one fewer match played, Coach Nsien’s squad comes back to Tulsa with eight points in hand. Achievement unlocked.

TULSA – As FC Tulsa heads off to Fenton, Missouri for its first match outside of Group D since the restart, the team is looking to build on what has been a historic start to the new era of FC Tulsa.

FC Tulsa has the most points from its opening three matches in club history, the best defensive record through three matches, and it sits as one of just four remaining unbeaten teams in the league. But according to Head Coach Michael Nsien, the team feels like it could be even better than that.

“I would have signed up for 5 points heading into the fourth game right away,” Nsien said, “although looking back I think we could have gotten even more points off the opening three games. Restarting the season, trying to get things back on track and find a rhythm, good cadence for training and rhythm for games.”

After the 19-day gap between the July 13 match at OKC Energy FC and the August 1 match at RGVFC, it’s been a much more manageable 7-day break, even if that match lasted nearly seven hours.

“I have tried to sleep well since then but at the same time I give credit to the players for a professional attitude,” Nsien said. “I remember in the locker room before the game when the times kept getting pushed back the players and their body language was still good, still enthusiastic and they fought all the way till 2:30 in the morning. As a coach that sets the right precedent and shows me that I have a good team with the right mentality.”

After the final whistle blew just after 2:30 a.m., FC Tulsa was on a flight at 8 a.m. the next morning with sights set on Saint Louis.

“We have had a few days to recover now,” defender Matt Sheldon said. “We got to catch up on sleep and we had a nice off day, so I just tried to sleep as much as possible and just get caught up. You are never going to be 100% recovered all the time so we just have to stay mentally focused and mentally tough and keep making a push.”

Sheldon, the former Saint Louis FC defender, will be making his first return to West Community Stadium since he last played there in 2017, only this time he’ll be lined up on the other side as his former club.

“It always adds a little bit extra motivation whenever you go back and play one of your old clubs,” Sheldon said. “But it is a great environment and it will be really exciting to play for all three points and have something on the line. They look good, they are a dynamic and we have been watching them a lot, scouting them. I think it will be a really good matchup.”

The match is set to kick off at 7 p.m. from West Community Stadium in Fenton, Mo. With a slightly rotated squad playing Wednesday in preparation for Saturday, Saint Louis FC needed a late equalizer to nab a point at home against SKCII. USL Championship save leader Kyle Morton was on the bench Wednesday, but expect the keeper to start on Saturday against FC Tulsa. Saint Louis’ leading scorer, Tyler Blackwood, started and played 90 minutes.

Storylines to Watch

Out of group affair – FC Tulsa will play its first match since the restart against a team outside of Group D. Any points earned in Saturday’s match against Saint Louis FC will count towards the league table, both for FC Tulsa in Group D and for Saint Louis in Group E. The match is one of three that FC Tulsa will play outside Group D (Sporting Kansas City II on August 29, and Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC on October 3).

TAMPA – After sealing the first victory of the 2020 season for FC Tulsa with match-winning goal, captain Ariel Martínez was named to the USL Championship’s Week 6 Team of the Week Bench for his performance.

Deep into the Texas night, Martínez bagged his first goal of the season in the 74’ against Rio Grande Valley FC Toros, putting Tulsa ahead 2-1 for what eventually was the final tally of the match. While unconfirmed, the goal, which happened at 2:14 a.m. local time, is likely the latest-ever goal scored in USL Championship history.

Outside of his first goal of the season, Martínez was a force all night for Tulsa. “Cuban Messi,” as he is known back in his native Cuba, nearly added his first assist as well in the match, but the goal scored by Rodrigo da Costa was ruled offside. He also almost opened the scoring in the 12’ of the match with a shot destined for the far corner before RGVFC’s keeper parried the shot with a diving save.

Martínez is Tulsa’s first weekly honoree on the Team of the Week in 2020. FC Tulsa will be back in action on Saturday night at Saint Louis FC. Kickoff for the match airing locally on MyTV 41 is scheduled for 7 p.m.
