Will Mark the First Open Cup Match for FC Tulsa in New Era of Club
CHICAGO – With the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup’s return in 2022, U.S. Soccer held its Second Round Draw on Friday morning, revealing FC Tulsa’s possible Second Round opponents. FC Tulsa, which will enter into the national tournament along with the 23 other eligible USL Championship, will play the winner of a First Round matchup between amateur clubs Tulsa Athletic and Azteca FC (Colo.) at ONEOK Field in April with a specific date and time to be announced.
FC Tulsa’s Open Cup match will mark its first in the new era of the club as the tournament was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic in both 2020 and 2021.
A local amateur team which plays its home matches at the public Dream Keepers Park in Midtown, Tulsa Athletic competes in the National Premier Soccer League and will participate in its fourth Open Cup in club history. To qualify for the tournament, Tulsa Athletic finished runner-up in the NPSL last season, losing 5-2 in the championship match to Denton Diablos FC. While FC Tulsa and Tulsa Athletic have never met on the pitch, several Tulsa Athletic players have served as interns in the FC Tulsa front office.
Azteca FC is one of 11 local qualifiers that made the 2022 U.S. Open Cup and is based out of Denver, Colo. They advanced to the First Round through qualifying, culminating with a win over fellow Colorado Super League team Harpos FC 4-3 in Added Extra Time.
FC Tulsa will announce ticket information for the Open Cup for the match at a later date. All 2022 FC Tulsa Season Ticket Members will receive a special ticket offer for the match.
