The Tulsa Roughnecks FC scored the game’s first goal and had plenty of chances to score more, but it was Swope Park who found a second goal against the run of play late in the match to give the Rangers the 2-1 victory at Kansas City’s Children’s Mercy Park.
It was the third straight one-goal loss for Tulsa.
The Roughnecks took advantage of a defensive miscue for the first goal of the game. In the 15th minute, when Eti Tavares intercepted a pass and delivered a through ball to Michael Gamble. Swope Park captain Amer Didic slid in front of Gamble to try to clear the ball, but missed on his attempted tackle. Gamble just had the keeper Eric Dick to beat, and he buried the shot to put the Roughnecks in front 1-0.
Swope Park evened things up off a set piece a few minutes later. About 25 yards from the goal on the right side of the field, Wan Kuzain struck the free kick to the far post. Fabian Cerda took a step in the wrong direction and allowed the equalizer to find the back of the net to level the score at 1-1.
In the 33rd minute, TRFC had a good chance to take the lead off a set piece. Just outside the box on the right, Nemanja Vukovic sent in a bouncing ball that got past the wall, but Dick was there to prevent the goal.
TRFC nearly found a second right before halftime. D.J. Dean sent a cross to Gamble in the center of the box, but the striker booted it high over the crossbar.
The first big second half chance for the Roughnecks came in the 54th minute. Jesus Ferreira found Brandon Servania in the center of the box, but the final shot was high.
Just a few minutes later, Tulsa came within inches of taking the lead. A free kick was punched away, but the ball found its way to Alex Covarrubias. The midfielder ripped a knuckler from 25 yards out, but the ball bounced off the left post.
In the 68th minute, another Roughnecks chance struck the woodwork. Michael Gamble delivered a ball to substitute Joaquin Rivas right at the edge of the box. Rivas struck a rope that grazed the side of the right post, just missing the goal.
Rivas had another golden chance a few minutes later. Ferreira found some space and fed a ball to Tulsa’s leading goal scorer, but the keeper once again prevented the go-ahead goal.
In the 79th minute, Swope Park found what turned out to be the game-winner. A defensive miscue by allowed Hadji Barry to find some space in center of the box. The Roughnecks line was unable to clear the danger, and Barry was able to get the ball past Cerda to give Swope Park a 2-1 lead.
Deep into stoppage time, the Roughnecks had one last chance for an equalizer. Covarrubias took the free kick and served a good ball that found Josh Morton. Morton’s header landed in the hands of Dick and the final whistle was blown.
The frustrating result was the third straight one-goal loss for the Roughnecks.
TRFC will take a break from USL action and play a friendly against the Colorado Rapids of Major League Soccer on Saturday in Memphis. Tulsa’s next USL regular season match will be next Wednesday, September 5 against the Sounders 2. Kickoff in Washington is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. CDT.
