The Tulsa Roughnecks FC announced some changes to the club’s roster this week. The changes included one departure and two additions.
Defender Francisco Ugarte has left the club to return to Chile due to family reasons. Ugarte has spent the past two seasons with the Roughnecks and served as the team’s captain this year.
Overall, he made a total of 38 appearances for the Roughnecks, including 32 starts.
“We appreciate everything that Francisco has done for the club in his two seasons in Tulsa,” said Brian Carroll. “He has been a true professional who has provided a lot to the organization, and we wish him well in his return to Chile.”
The roster additions include defender Uzi Tayou and midfielder Alex Covarrubuias. Tayou arrived in Tulsa this week and will be available for Saturday’s match with Fresno. Covarrubias will join the club early next week.
Tayou played collegiately at West Virginia University and spent time earlier this season with FC Wichita in the NPSL. He was a part of the Wichita side that knocked the Roughnecks out of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup back on May 16.
The 6’3” defender also experience in indoor soccer, playing for the Baltimore Blast and Las Vegas Legends. He has also featured for the US Arena National Team, and has made a Mini-Futbol World Cup appearance in Indonesia.
His brother Franck is a forward for Fresno FC.
“Uzi has great character, and we expect him to improve the physical balance and contribute in all aspects tactically to our back line,” said TRFC Head Coach Michael Nsien. “He’s very vocal and a great organizer. He comes in right away with the task of improving our goals against numbers.”
The 26-year-old Covarrubias joins Tulsa after spending most of his professional career with LA Galaxy II. He made 97 appearances for LosDos from 2014-2017, including 21 last season.
He also played in four USL games with the Oklahoma City Energy in 2017 before signing with Fresno prior to the start of this season. He did not appear in a regular season match for the Foxes and joined Des Moines in the PDL and played in five games with the Menace.
“Alex has good experience in this league,” said Nsien. He has a professional attitude and will raise the standards. He also has excellent deep playmaking ability which allows us to be an attacking threat in any part of the field.”
