The Tulsa Roughnecks FC kept its unbeaten streak alive late Saturday night with a 1-1 draw in Las Vegas, but the result was bittersweet. The Roughnecks appeared to have netted a possible game winner on a shot from Riggs Lennon in the 76th minute, but after a protest from Las Vegas goalkeeper Ricardo Ferrino, the goal was waved off for an apparent offside call.
Despite the controversial call, the away draw was a good point for the Roughnecks. Their record now stands at 0-3-4 with three straight home matches now on the immediate schedule.
Saturday’s match began with the Roughnecks under almost constant pressure through the first 15 minutes. The Lights eventually broke through with the first goal on a header from Carlos Alvarez on the cross from Isaac Diaz.
TRFC started to gain more possession later in the half, and it eventually paid off in a goal. In the 44th minute, a long delivery from Paris Gee found Joaquin Rivas. The Las Vegas resident made it a successful homecoming when he buried his shot into the back of the net to level the score at 1-1. For Rivas, it was his team-leading fourth goal of the season.
That set the scene for the most interesting half of the season for TRFC in the second 45 minutes. The Roughnecks controlled much of the play in the early part of the half, then the Cashman Field sprinkler system came on in the 63rd minute.
After a two-minute delay, play resumed and the match changed nine minutes later when Las Vegas forward Matthew Thomas was issued a straight red card for a late challenge on Adrian Jusino.
Playing with a man advantage, TRFC appeared to take the lead in the 76th minute. Riggs Lennon buried a deflected rebound into the back of the net. Both teams headed to the center circle for a kickoff, but Las Vegas goalkeeper Ferrino sprinted to the assistant referee in protest. After a brief discussion, the goal was waved off and the score remained level.
After the controversial call, neither side was able to find the back of the net in the final minutes of regulation and six minutes of stoppage time, resulting in the draw.
The Roughnecks will now prepare for three straight home matches with the first scheduled for Wednesday, May 9 when Reno 1868 FC visits ONEOK Field.
