A second straight trip to California resulted in a second straight draw for the Tulsa Roughnecks FC late Saturday night. The Roughnecks used an early goal from Joaquin Rivas to gain a 1-1 draw with the Sacramento Republic at Sacramento’s Papa Murphy’s Park.
The result ran TRFC’s unbeaten streak to three straight games and left the Roughnecks with three points on the season with a 0-3-3 record. Sacramento, who entered the match in first place in the USL's Western Conference, remained unbeaten on the season.
Tulsa needed just over 60 seconds to take the lead in the match. Paris Gee stole possession and delivered a cross into the middle of the box and perfectly onto the head of Rivas. The former Sacramento midfielder flicked his header into the lower corner of the net to give TRFC the quick lead.
It was a tough first half for Roughnecks goalkeeper Fabian Cerda, who received treatment from athletic trainer Koby Smith on three different occasions after hitting the ground on clearances, but he was still able to keep his clean sheet intact.
Cerda made his best save of the half in the 32nd minute on a hard shot from Jeremy Hall at the top of the penalty arc. He leaped to tip the blast over the crossbar for a corner kick.
Cerda was called into action again just after the halftime break when a deflection set up Cole Seiler, but his right-footed shot was turned aside by the Tulsa keeper.
Tulsa nearly put the game away in the 78th minute when Fernando Arce’s left-footed shot deflected off the outside of the goalpost.
Two minutes later, Cerda came up big again with a diving save off a header by Cameron Iwasa.
The Roughnecks were denied the full three points in the 89th minute. Sacramento recovered a clearance near midfield, and substitute Luis Espino Vazquez found room on the left side of the box and beat Cerda with a low shot to give the two teams a split of the points.
Despite the late goal, the draw marked the first time that TRFC has gotten points off Sacramento. The Roughnecks were winless in the previous five matches with the Republic.
Tulsa will return to the Pacific Time Zone for its next match on Saturday, May 5. The Roughnecks will play their first-ever game against the expansion Las Vegas Lights. Kickoff in Las Vegas is scheduled for 10:00 p.m. CDT.
