Nelson Recorded Six Saves in Draw at Miami FC
TAMPA, Fla. – Goalkeeper Michael Nelson made his FC Tulsa debut last Saturday night in Miami after being acquired via MLS loan in the offseason and it didn’t take long for the 28 year old to showcase his abilities. The USL Championship took notice and named Nelson to its Week 1 Team of the Week bench.
Nelson made critical stop after critical stop in the club’s first match of the season to keep the scoreline level. The Texas native amassed six saves on seven shots faced, tied for the most in the USL Championship after Week 1. Heading into Week 2, Nelson’s save percentage sits at 85.7%.
“My goal every game is to help the team achieve success however the game makes that possible, so each game it’s a combination of communication, making saves, commanding the area, and distributing the ball,” said Nelson following Saturday’s match. “Tonight, there were more shots on target so there was more opportunity to make saves, but I think I can improve on my communication with the guys and continue to help put the ball in better areas off my feet. I’m not one to put a number on it, but I’m proud of the team battling to get a tie and hope to keep improving my all around game behind them.”
Nelson and FC Tulsa are back in action on Friday, March 17 as the club travels to Alabama to take on Birmingham Legion FC.
